i have to give it a lot of gas to keep it running when i start it, every time,no matter if its warm or cold, and it wont idle unless i revv it up really high, then it chugs, but idles. could this be the work of the fuel pump, or a sensor?

 

anyone have any ideas of what it could be?

 

I'm not sure, but having 250,000 miles on your truck probably doesn't help things either. I dunno, Check for vacuum leaks.

 

maybe the fuel filter perhaps. you could undo the line pre filter and turn the key and see if its pumping fuel and if its not then yeah its proibably the pump but I would do that check before you go by a new one. save some $$$

 

I don't think it's the fuel pump. In fuel injected engines, the fuel pump is a very high PSI pump so it can be forced through the injectors and be atomized correctly. I think a fuel pump would fail completely and therefor would not work at all. I would tend to think it would be clogged injectors before thinking it was a fuel pump.

Most likely I think your problem is probably just a vacuum line has come loose somewhere.

OH.... something just popped in my mind... im gonna be checkin the MAF too. when the MAF kept disconnecting itself a year ago, it would do this. its tight, but i think it may be dirty. will let every1 know.

how's your timing chain?

 

A MAF or mass air flow sensor will get dirty very easy and the small heated wire needs cleaning sometimes, but 86-95 trucks don't have MAFs, they use a VAFM or a volume air flow meter which is sealed up and just uses a flap door to estimate the volume of air.

 

mine has a big sensor right on the air box. last time i didnt have it hooked up properly it did this. so VAFM or MAF, im gonna check it out, clean the injectors, and check for vacuum leaks.

 

check the vacuum line that goes into the fuel pressure regulator, its on the back of the motor if its a 22RE.

it could very well be a fuel pump though, i just replaced mine.

to whoever said the fuel pump is pumping at a really high pressure, your wrong.
the pressure is between 27-31psi.

when my pump went bad it would run and drive, but bog way way down and stuff. is the motor throwing any codes?

 

30-45 psi fuel pump for fuel injection is very high compared to a carb'ed system. Compare the two and you will see it's at least 4x-10x PSI greater in most compared systems... If you put a fuel pump made for a carb system on a fuel injection system, it will not work!

He has already noted that he can rev really high, so fuel delivery is there, so it's not the fuel pump IMO...

 

i dont have a machine to read any codes, but it prob would read a code saying the cold start injector is not working, since i have it disconnected until i buy a new wiring harness and new sensors. any idea where i could buy a code reader? and what type should i buy? i know not obd1 or something...

 

Is your check engine light on? You can have it read for free at Autozone or Advanceauto.

 

They can't read pre OBDII vehicles, but he can do it with a paper clip. I can't remember which pins you stick the paper clip but its been posted on here before.

ok there wasnt much wrong, my mechanic said my throttle body was a little dirty, and i DID have a vacuum leak. he did both. runnin like a champ now.. i just cant believe how much power it still has for 251,000 miles, i can burn rubber like no tomorrow with it if i truly wanted to. leavin da civics in shame. . ok, time to start replacing sensors and pumps anyway. call it '250,000 mile work/tuneup'. thanks to everyone on here who responded.
