Question I found an almost perfect 92

I found a '92 standard cab pickup, 1 owner, clean inside and out not no leaks, mostly all highway miles, 5speed 22re overhauled 60k miles ago (at 200k). I was ready to make a deal, then I asked the guy how regularly he changed the oil...he said about every 15,000 miles.....It's a beautiful truck, I just don't know if that kind of neglect is reversable. What do you guys think??

wha kind of oil does he us, Synthetic? high mileage? does he put it under alot of pressure often? does he change it more ofetn in the winter? thre sooo many factors that can effect on when he changes his oil. When i bought mine from a rip off dealer ( not a toyota dealer) i found out that the previous owner (the 1st owner) had not changed the oil in almos 1.5-2 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and she did this on a regualr basis (I know cause i called her and asked how often she used to change it and she said every 1-2 years!) she was a crazy woman. She had damage every where on the truck, the front end had been basiclly GLUED back together!!! and when we went to change the oil...HOLY *************** there was so much crud coming out with the oil i could not believe my eyes! BUT we did TWO engine flushes in a row and that really cleaned my engine up, and i even improved my mileage by at least 4-5MPG. So i would maybe ask, is this how he has been changing it th whole time has owned the truck? or just the last few years. maybe ask if he has ever done a engine flush?

He just uses regular oil, and he has followed this pattern since the truck left the dealer. the guy is too car ignorant to have any idea that there is such a thing as an engine flush...if it were a jeep 4.0 chevy 350 or any of the other motors I have experience with I wouldn't be thinking about it right now, but I know first hand that 22re doesn't give up without a fight.

That explains why the engine had to be overhauled at 200K.

the truck should be fine as long as he used a good oil even if its regular oil. its only recemened at 3000 to change the oil. i would change the oil in my acura every 10000 miles and it lasted for over than 150000 thousand miles and the engine was as good as brand new. so the truck should be ok.

I would still get it. A friend of mine who works at a local honda dealership out here was telling me about a woman who blew the engine on her civic. The thing lasted 52,000 miles without a single oil change!

I'd say don't worry about it. The 22R in my 82 when my grandpa had it he really didn't change the oil. It was changed when he overheated the truck cause he ran it out of antifreeze and my dad changed it once and it was also changed the second time he overheated it and it warped the block. He had the truck for 18 years so maybe 4 oil changes if it was lucky and it ran like a champ till I rebuilt it due to it have some stuck rings but the bearings were just fine. Changed them anyways for good measure but didn't need to at all. So if a 22R can run great with 4 oil changes in 18 years I don't think you need to be worried. And if you guys are doing the math he was the second owner. The motor just purrs.

I guess it depends on how it sounds and runs. But if he said 15k miles maybe he was just throwing out a number because he barely ever changes it and doesn't really know when the last time he changed it was. If you live in Washington I would imagine that Toyota trucks are a dime a dozen and I personally would keep looking for something with lower mileage. If the truck has 260k miles that means that the tranny and every other part on it does too. It is a Toyota but if he can't even change the engine oil regularly then he has probably neglected everything else on it. Just my opinion though. Good Luck.

i had a 91 pickup 22re. I had it about 6 years, never once thought about changing the oil. i changed it once about 2 months before i sold it, never caused any problem or shown any sign of wear, still good as new. 2 of the 6 years it sat.

i say dont worry about it.

I had an 86 and an 87 4Runner and they both ran great but I still changed the oil every 3k miles. The 22r is a great engine but it is still just a machine and machines break and wear out over time. I'm just trying to give you an objective point of view is all. Changing the oil every 15k miles with Dyno oil seems a little long to go between intervals to me.

If it runs good and does not smoke or rattle i wouldn't worry about it.. I know people who never change oil... true enough its great idea , i change mine regularly just to make me feel good.. but its a little over rated
