Hi all, I have just recently purchased a 91 22re M/T 4x4 and the speedo does not work. I am looking for a new cluster and preferably one with a tach. Is this possible? Is the wiring there for a tachometer? I see a few on Ebay out of 4 runners, but not sure how to correctly map the part numbers to my truck. I am new to the Toyota world so looking for any help! Thank you all.


I am also trying to determine what specific manual transmission, transfer case, etc is in this truck.

 

The interiors changed in 1989 I believe but I am not sure if the gauge cluster changed. Gauge clusters are interchangeable though between the base and SR5 clusters that had the oil pressure gauge and tach, you will need to add the sensor though, it’s doable for sure. Are you sure that it’s the gauge cluster that’s broken and not the gear or cable for the speedometer? Marlin Crawler will have good info to figure out what tranny (I believe it should be a W56 for that year just not sure what version) and a top shift transfer case.

 

Plenty of threads on this subject. You'll need a cluster from the same body generation. 89/90-95 Pickups and 4Runners will fit your truck. Make sure the replacement cluster has the same type of speedometer, either cable or electric to match your truck. Make sure to buy a cluster from a 4 cylinder truck, not a V6 or the tach will be off. It is adjustable I hear, but I've never tried. You'll also have to get a new oil pressure sender for a gauge. The sender for the idiot light will immediately and irreparably damage your oil pressure gauge if you hook it up.

For bonus points and to be a good, honest person, roll the replacement odometer to match the original odometer so everything matches up and is legally correct.

 

This part is actually illegal, iir you have have a DOT license.

 

Most states are probably odometer mileage exempt due to age anyway though. So roll it back on your own if it is!

 

@Dr Phat - thank you for the info. I will check out Marling Crawler. The guy I purchased it from said he replaced the cable and it is still not working. Could of be a load of crap though. I try to take people for their word these days but it seems it is very clear that is no longer a real thing. I will have to pull it apart fully to double-check.

So my current set up has an oil pressure gauge, but you are saying with any different cluster a new oil pressure sender is required? Is this so it integrates with the new cluster? If so, how do I determine which specific pressure sender to get that will match the new cluster? I would not be looking for a new gauge to show that is had less milage that is done. I am not a POS like that, but always good to note it because we sure know those kinda people are out there.

 

Not sure when they changed from cable to elect speedo, but my 92 pickup M/T 4cyl DLX (with tach) has an electric speedo.

 

Someone on this forum recently had a cable speedometer on a '95 . Go figure.

 

I am not knowledgable enough on these trucks to know. This is just what I was told rem the seller. I believe the speedo cable going down to the transmission housing. I can have a look an find out.

 

Not sure how that would be illegal. You're rolling the replacement cluster to match the actual mileage of the truck it's going in to.

The SR5 cluster with the tach has an oil pressure gauge. The DLX cluster with no tach has an oil pressure warning light. In your first post you said you wanted a cluster for with a tach. I took that to mean your current cluster does not have a tach, although you didn't actually say that. If you already have an SR5 cluster with tach and oil pressure gauge, your current sending unit will work. For a gauge you need the sending unit for a gauge, for a light, you need the sending unit for a light.

 

Ah yes, you are correct and now I understand. Would this be an all in one sending unit or separate for each? Apologies in advance for the silly questions. Just trying to understand what all I need to look for when I go to junkyard or order from ebay so I do not miss anything.

If your cluster has a gauge, you need the sender for a gauge. If your cluster has the light, you need the sender for the light. No factory cluster for our trucks has both. Your engine only has one oil pressure sender, it needs to match the style of cluster you have.
