Hot start problems with 22RE
Hi -
Hot start problems with my 22RE, and hoping y'all can help.
I've got a 1989 Xtra cab pickup with the 22RE and 5-speed. 136,000 miles. The truck lives at 5,400 feet altitude. Totally stock.
This is the first summer I've had it and I'm noticing hot starting problems after short stops from full operating temperature.
It starts and runs great when cold, and whenever driving. (Thanks to Mike D's tips, I'm averaging 20.5-22 mpg overall!)
Here are symptoms from last night - 5-6 pm, about 85 degrees, sunny:
Left work, drive 8 miles, parked for 30 minutes, drove 2 miles, parked for 15 minutes, drove 3 miles, parked for 10 minutes, drove 4 miles home. Small-city traffic. The last start took a bit to catch. Not sure what I was doing with the gas pedal.
Parked at home, and within five minutes went to start the truck. It would NOT start. Cranked very well, no catch at all. Gas pedal all the up, all the way floored, in the middle. Made no difference. Using the "Clutch Start Cancel" made no difference either.
Tried it after an hour with the hood up (6 pm, direct sun into the engine bay, 85 degrees) and it still wouldn't start. I waited 5 minutes and tried one more time before beginning serious trouble shooting.
It fired right up, ran rough for ten seconds, and then ran fine. I parked it and took the other car today.
It's seems like it must be no spark or no fuel. I didn't smell gas at the tailpipe or in the engine bay. No apparent smoke once it started.
I've searched on this and all I found was a post about fuel injector leakage problems in a six-cylinder.
In the last six months/5,000 miles, I've replaced the battery, wires, plugs, air filter, cap, rotor, oil, tranny and diff fluids, etc. I've adjusted the timing and valves to factory spec. New thermostat. Did not change the fuel filter.
Due for an oil change, but there's plenty of oil and coolant, etc.
Thanks in advance for comments and suggestions.
Hope y'all are enjoying the summer...

Thank you, 4Crawler!
This suggestion - jumping the terminals to run the fuel pump whenever the ignition is on - definitely helps.
However, the problem is still there.
Is this a sign that the fuel pump is dying?
Fuel pump relay?
Anything else I should be looking at?
I'm very apprehensive about messing with AFM, but is that the next step?
Thanks in advance...

See the web page for details. Either the circuit opening relay (there is no separate fuel pump relay) or the ignition switch or the AFM is acting up, test the AFM to see if that is the cause:

If the ign. sw. is the problem, either leave the jumper in, replace the CO relay or replace the ign. switch.
