Does anyone have pictures of how they have the battery in there 3vze? Mine keeps sliding over and hitting the power steering pulley. I'm considering welding piece a L brackettin the battery tray so it keeps the battery from sliding over.

 

The loose battery problem is an issue with some of the toyota trucks. As you have pointed out, it really isn't a good idea to have a battery that slides around. I've seen photos of interesting solutions, like using a ratchet strap, an aftermarket battery box, or a custom made hold down bracket. Before I installed a battery box, I was using wooden spacers with the factory hold down clamp.

 

Sounds like you don't have the original hold-down clamp. You definitely need something. (No, an L bracket wouldn't be enough. The battery is full of sulphuric acid; you don't want it bouncing around at all.)

Sounds you like you might have had the wrong size battery. All batteries will store charge, but you need one that fits. You can often get a different Group Size that has the same footprint (width, depth) but a different height. Too short :: needs spacers.

 

All kinds of after market battery hold downs and trays .

Even Plastic spacers if your battery is to low.

Why anyone has a unsecured battery Sparks are not fun nor are batteries cheap.

I have the factory hold down. I had block of wood in the hold down but it still slide over enough to hit the pulley.

 

Not tight enough? Do you have the plastic battery tray? (This isn't really enough to keep it from moving if it's not clamped to something, but probably still a good thing to have.)

After a little bit of post-collision body work, I think the "apron" on my truck ended up a tiny bit lower below the battery. So I, too, have a 1/4" spacer block on one side, just to keep the battery snug.

 

Its best to get the OEM battery tray with clamp to ensure the battery does not move. You can get both from ebay at reasonable prices.

Bungee cords--- the heavy kind that truckers use.

I pick several free ones off the road every month.

When my odd size battery gives up the ghost, I'll get one of the correct size and then re-install the factory hold down.

 

My rule of thumb the battery should not move when in place if it does back to the drawing room.

Granted lots of these trucks and 4runners the battery trays have seen better days.

For a few Dollars Deka Battery makes a few size trays

 

i've had that happen whe the everstart maxx profiles were limited. get a battery spacer. remember it weighs a tonne, so anytime you bolt a battery in, try your best to move it around. you should be able to kick it hard and it won't move. i've tried the aftermarket and billet straps, but best is factory tie-downs, and a spacer if needed to keep the tie-down square.

 

I'm not sure about your 3vze, but on my 86 22r the weakest link on the factory mounting system was the J hook. I modified a 3/8" eye bolt by using a hacksaw to cut a small section out of the "eye" to convert the eye bolt in to a hook. On my truck the J hook connects to the body of the truck, not to a battery tray. Upgrading the hook greatly improved the clamping force...I see Dorman actually makes a 3/8" J hook. http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/more...jnid=50&jpid=7

 

Yeah, buddy had a Yota that done the same thing & rubbed a hole in the battery also. It be nice if we all have the dough for the Optima type. Hey, it's not a perfect world yet. Anyway, try to secure it the strongest way you can & most importantly be safe.
