OK I had thought that you had the motor rebuilt, not the trans. The cooler could be restricted from junk that was in the system before. Make sure to take it back to whomever built it and see what they say about the light. Maybe do a flow test on the tranny system.

Yup just got off the phone, they said not to drive it if possible, quote " That light should not even think about coming on". They are picking it up Monday, guy on the phone mentioned a flow test as well.

Yep mine has never come on in 13 years, with or without OD it shouldn't come on. IIRC the temp has to reach 304 degrees F for the light to come on.

Dublin, sounds like you got lucky and have a good transmission mechanic. Sometimes when you work on a tranny, you can do everything right and still have a little glitch or two that needs to be worked out. The worst case scenario for the mechanic is you DON"T get in touch with him, most of the time it is something we can take care of relatively easy as long as the vehicle hasn't been driven long enough to be damaged further. Getting bad torque converters is not too uncommon. It would be nice if every shop had the equipment to build them in house but a good set up is close to 15,000 dollars. Good luck I hope they get the problem straightened out to your satisfaction.

Update

Tranny seems to checkout ok, he did find what he believes was the problem. Had me stop by to see for myself, the wiring for the sensor was mashed and looked as if it could have been shorting out. Stopping back in friday to have gauges installed (trans temp, oil pressure and water temp). Picking up new parts for my Aisin's too, I think a spring broke (won't lock or unlock) stuck in the middle. So my truck should be set for our next snow storm. Thanks guys for the info/help.

Where exactly IS the sensor the the trans temp? When I had trouble with that light, I always wondered if the sensor was bad or there was a wiring problem, since my trans fluid never smelled burned. Funny thing is, since I installed a trans temp gauge, the light has never come on again.

In one of your posts, you said that you were running @3600 rpms and 65mph for awhile when your light came on and you had OD on. If this is correct, it sounds like OD was never kicking in. That is actually worse than driving at that speed with OD off. Actually after thinking about it, if you were driving at that speed with OD off, you probably wouldn't overheat, but you would get crappy gas mileage. Make sure when you get it back, that you can tell it is going into OD.

Also, on your hubs, it could just be too little or too much grease. I have definately seen them do that when they had too much grease in them.

4mydogs, passenger side toward the front.
Slosurfer, tranny seemed to be shifting great OD was on (stupid work truck has a OD "on" light, yota has an OD "off" light) Gotta start pushin some of these buttons, just the other day found one that makes the window go up and down.
snap-on, now that you mention that tread I remember seeing it, I'll look it up.

What I meant was that you had OD on, but it wasn't actually kicking into OD. With OD reached and 33's, I run at about 2600 rpm, you said you were at 3600 rpm. That means it was never actually reaching OD, you were in third gear which is way worse (temperature) than running those rpms with your OD off.

You might be onto something there. Odd thing is I was turning about the same rpms before the rebuild and shouldn't the tranny throw a code for this!?

Something just occured to me, my truck is supposed to have 4.88's but according to a history search when I bought it it was damaged in the left rear. If the rear end was damaged it could have been replaced with a different geared rearend. Any visual way to check this out?

I think there is a way where you can spin the driveshaft and count revolutions of the tire, I don't remember the specifics but I know I have seen posts explaining how to do it. That being said, you would know if the front and rear were not geared the same when you put it in 4wd. YOur transfer case would not be very happy.

4WD always seemed pretty good so the gearing is probably still what it came with. Since it didn't throw the high temp before it could be ok and just was the shorting wire (I did notice the CK ENG lt flicker on briefly too but there were no codes for that either. Well I'm off work early today so off to pickup and install thoses gauges. I'll post up some running temps later.
