Help putting tranny back in

Help putting tranny back in

Spent 2 hours last night trying to get my tranny back in. Any tips? The bellhousing is about 1 inch away and I can still spin the trani so it appears that the trani driveshaft still isn't though the clutch disk. It seems like it should be through the clutch plate by now. How do I get it the rest of the way in? It seems stuck. I anticipated this because it was a real bear getting it off the motor.

Hopefully the clutch is all lined up. Use an alignment tool to put the clutch in?

Put the tranny in gear and spin the rear shaft when you think its close. Thats what I did when i was working on some pos 88 jeep.

Had this happen on the 89 when I redid the clutch. Everything was lined up and it still wouldn't mate to the engine. Turned out the speedo cable had slipped in between the engine and bell housing, kept it about an inch out.

I used the alighment tool. If I put it in gear, I don't think I'll be able to spin the shaft. I'll check for cables when I get home, but pretty sure it is clear. It seems weird I'm only 1" out and my shaft doesn't seem like it is through the clutch disc.

Its all about the angle of the dangle........ The dowel pins have to be straight on in the holes or it will not go. Jack the back of the trans up and down and turn the rear yoke with it in gear so that the input shaft turns.

If you cannt spin the trans with it in gear try spinning the engine using the crank bolt. Just go the right way.

I used a couple of C clamps to pull the trans into the motor. I put one clamp on each side of the bottom of the trans and tightened them. Then wiggled the trans, check for alignment, tightnen clamps and so on. Just make sure your gap is consistent all the way around the housing.

Must be careful with this method though it works. I have damaged pilot bearings do this. Also be careful that you do not bend any of the clutch fingers or you will have shaky enguagment.

Um....yea i would NOT do this. You can break the fingers and damage stuff (as stated below).

Thanks for all the advice. I'll try some of this tomorrow and see what happens. I'll update sat or sun hopefully with a success story.
