Hi guys. I am finding lots of weird stuff with my grounds from the previous owner- redoing everything. Crazy splices everywhere, wire couplings held together by bolts, and couplings twisted together with elec tape. The good stuff!

These two wires: I have no idea where they go. If you know or could take a look for me that would be the tits!



They do have a resistance to ground, but it's in the milliohms. I feel like they are all probably ground wires, just want to be sure where they go.

Have traced them to see where they come from?

 

Can't help on those two wires and stuck on my phone makes searching a pain.

That clump of red butt connectors might be worth taking a look at. Me and butt connectors do not get along well.

 

Oh yeah I could do that, was just hoping to avoid opening the harness and loom crap

The but connectors are terrible. PO totally was an electrical hack!

 

Someone will chime in on those two wires....it seems they've been identified before. Or, maybe not.

Was the battery on that side originally? Possibly some 12v accessory wire. Chase the loam they go into and see where it heads off to.

Gotta hate hack wiring.

 

Those are something the hack added .unless I missed them there are no solid yellow or white wires that go to ground in the whole vehicle .

They could be spliced into something??

Do you have anything not working?? This is about the only way to figure out what the extra wires might be for.

If not insulate them and cable tie them out of the way in case you figure out just what they might be for later.

Yeah it's an 87.

I bet you are right about them being for random accessories. They seem to head up in through the firewall. And I know the PO had a CB radio antenna... Could be for that.

At first I just figured it was part of the OEM harness because the loom looks identical, like it is supposed to be there.

God how badly I want to just redo this whole harness. There are crimp couplers EVERYWHERE. I hate crimp connectors, they always fail. Come on people: adhesive heat shrink!!

Those butt connectors, I feel for you. It's the sign of a true expert and it just makes me wonder what else you'll find. It sounds like you're finding plenty of fail.

 

2 out of the 4 grounds were confirmed wrong. The one visible in the pic attached to the bottom of the upper intake was tied with a screw and nut to the white wire and wrapped with electrical tape. Now that is some wizardry! Once I fixed that and routed it properly, my idle smoothed out drastically and it feels almost like a different engine when cruising lightly.

I still haven't been able to locate the ground that is supposed to go to the AC housing, but I haven't looked very hard yet. Really the only ground that was correct was the one that goes from batt to body.

I am on the lookout for a new wiring harness & fuse/diag panel if any of y'all have any recommendations besides the obvious boneyard method.

 

I tried a few years ago to get a new harness(for my 87 4Runner) from Toyota it has been discontinued .

The plastic clips on the connectors and plugs get brittle with age after all we are talking 30 years or pretty close.

 

Bah I figured. I wonder if a place like OWS would allow you to buy the engine harness alone. Or I wonder how hard it would be to re-make it...

You can get replacement connectors pretty easily right?

Not hard to do but very time consuming sort of like knitting a sweater for a Dog .

Just a few hours a week.

Most all the connectors could still be had although I never really tried to buy any for a while.

 

Many of the connectors are still available from the dealer. The connectors have a 5 digit number on them. The connector part numbers are 90980-xxxxx, with the last 5 digits being the small number molded on the connector.

You can also get connectors and pins at bmotorsports. The Sumitomo brand connectors are used in Toyotas.

Wrong side but I know that alternator harness has yellow and white wires together, plus red IG wire. Is ur charge light working properly?
Also check ECU to injector wiring in schematics for Those butt-connectors.

 

Those wires are much to big to belong to the charge harness but no telling what the last owner may have done.

I am amazed it runs as much work as she had done I hope it was real cheap.

If she was not so far away I would give her my 2 87 4Runners for back ups and a project.

 

Or, possibly more accurately, that it ran at all (or as well as it did) before Jenny began giving it some major TLC.
