Help finding dust cover part

I'm currently rebuilding my IFS on my 91 22re Pickup.

So far so good.

I'm stuck with this part though. I see it in several diagrams by name (4wd dust cover) but can't seem to find a part number for it. Mine have ruined garter springs and need to be replaced. Anyone have some insight?

I am assuming you want what is marked as 43211Q on this diagram

looks like that is a 9031660002

Well, not quite:

Your order has been updated as follows:

I have cancelled your order due to the part# you ordered has been discontinued. The new part# requires 2 different parts. The part#s to order are 2-90304-76005 and 2-90316-60004.

Greg
Well, crap. did a bit of reading up on this. I see where he's coming from about the two new seals. The 60004 seal is the one I'm looking for for my hub, pictured above. If I had the stock CV's still, I'd get the replacement 76005 seal for the CV end. However, my original CV's were run without the boots for years and were destroyed. I bought some new Carquest axles from Advance Auto Parts to replace them. They have the swiper style seal on them that I'm thinking should be the same as the 76005 indicated above, meaning I should only need the 60004 seals.

Has this been anyone else's experience? The two seals together (x2 for both sides) would be over $100 dollars, so I'm only wanting to buy what I absolutely need. I'm tempted at this point to just yank the garter springs out of my old ones and let the rubber swiper seal on the end of the CV take care of it. lol.

Thanks,
Trent

If you have not done so already, read thru the "sticky" thread titled "Identify a replacement part & earn$" it may help.

It was a good read, but OP kinda left us on a cliffhanger with his c-clip issue. One of the posters recommended modifying one of the seals to fix his issue. If I have to cut the seal to make it work, I don't want to spend $50 on new ones for that. lol.

My issue is a little different since I have aftermarket axles. I think I'll buy one 60004 seal and see how it interfaces with my Carquest axles. I'll report back my findings.

there is no cliffhanger. the c-clip is needed, otherwise damage to the locking hub will occur.

Oh, no doubt on that. But he never told us just how he managed to get the c-clip to go in. Did he order the other set of seals for his cv axles? Did he cut the seals he had?

I saw ewong's post about his axle wallowing out his bushings over time, an issue I'd rather not replicate! To be fair, I never thought running without the c-clip was a good idea, and never intended to do that.

It not only wallowed out the bushing - it wallowed out the manual hub

Expensive lesson!

Okay, so here's what I found out.

The seal built into the Carquest axles play nice with the old spindle seal type out of the box. You can modify them to work with the new 60004 spindly seal as well by slightly trimming the first rubber ring on the axle side seal. With that moved out of the way, the second ring seals inside the spindle seal very nicely.

That said, I have a couple concerns I'd like some opinions on:
First, there is fair amount of axial play in the c/v axles inside of the spindles. Not a huge amount, but maybe 1/16" or so all around, at both the front and the back. This is with the axle fully seated with the spacer and snap-ring in place. Normal? Or do I have worn bushings? It's the same on both sides. May be related to point two below as well:

Second issue. With the truck sitting on jack stands and both sides of the IFS at full droop, I'm noticing that these new axles seem to be a bit too short? The front end binds up so the axles don't spin. I thought maybe there was another component of the front suspension that would limit droop travel, but I don't think that's the case. Looks like a case of "don't use cheap new axles from the parts houses"?
