Headlights go out on an 88 22re

Sometimes the headlights go out, the high beam indicator light comes on, I flick the light switch, and the headlights are back.

I went to an auto parts store to get a headlight relay. They said save your $30, the relay doesn't work that way, and that it's probably a small inconsistent short in the switch leaver mechanism or steering column.

Thoughts or experiences welcome...

this is likely the result of the factory wiring flaw by the toyota electrical engineers. all the current passes through the switch stalk, and burns the contacts. intalling a relay will help, but you'll need to take the switch apart and clean the contacts. there are posts/topics out there (here on yotatech and at t4r.com) detailing how.

Thank you wallytoo. If you are responding, I guess you can see my post. I rebooted and still cannot see it. I'll Ctrl+V below.

Original post and Ctrl+V in my response are blank after multiple reboots. Weird. Lots of waiting for adds to load too. Admins, what's up?

I'll type my post again (rather than copy/paste from word) to see if I can see it.

i cannot see your post, only the topic of the thread, and the "headline" that says the same thing as the thread title.

the issue is fairly common.

lulu -

Did you try to set Text Color (Text Color) ? It's the underlined A on the tool bar. Leave it set to Automatic.

Please tell the person who helped you, that he makes good sense and gives good advice.

Your intermittent problem and high-beam indicator coming on while low-beam intermittently turns off point to the low-beam contacts. on the dimmer-stalk-switch. Do as Terry did to make sure contacts are clean and in good condition.

How does this happen?
When pins 6 and 13 of the dimmer-switch-stalk lose contact:
1) low-beam filaments lose ground so they turn off, AND
2) positive side of high-beam indicator gets12V through the low-beam filament so indicator comes on.

Schematic is here:

Thank you all for helping me post (I'm guessing the text color was black and not visible since I was pasting from word), and on identifying the stalk as a likely culprit.

I will break out the nail file and give the stalk a once over.

I recommend using something finer that that. Perhaps the finest sandpaper / lapping film you can get.... Grit 2000 or finer...
