I am installing new headlights and upgrading the wiring all at the same time.

I am using the diagram off his website:


Heres the problem.

Got it all done and turned on the headlights and everything seemed to work. Turned them off and the when i went to turn the headlights back on there was nothing. After tinkering I figured out that if i have the headlight switch to on it wont work until i toggle to quickflash, or engage the brights. Then they will work. However, there is no switching from bright to headlights. just one setting and i am not really sure if it on brights or normal.

Also, the resistor in this picture is so hot it melted the tape off and burned the hell out my fingers when i grabbed it.

Obviously i have something wrong!!! Anyone have a clue cause i am stuck.

Unless you wired something wrong, that is probably the best option.

This is the way that I eventually wired it.

Obviously the high indicator will not work like this though. I would like it to work but I cant figure out why that resistor got so hot. When i say hot I mean I literally have blistes on my thumb and forefinger from where I grabbed it. the skin will fall off tomorrow I assume!!

 

What wattage resistor did you use?

the 1 watt one that you recommended on your site. Radio Shack part number 271-151

 

Usually 1 watt works, but on some vehicles, you need a bigger resistor as noted:

How to tell? Resistor gets too hot!

 

Hey dntsdad, what year/type of yota do you have? Did you install all new wiring? I'm trying to find where my headlights are grounded on my 91' 4Runner. 4Crawler gave me some hints but I can't seem to find the ground connection. If you have a second gen and you re-wired everything could you tell me where your ground connection was?

 

Headlights are grounded via the combo (dimmer) switch on the steering column. Follow the ground wire from there down to the main cab ground point. Not sure the location on the 2nd gen, but on the 1st gen, there is a bolt into the body sheet metal down behind the driver's side kick panel. How to identify that bolt? It will be the only one into the sheet metal with wires attached. What sort of wires? Usually all brown colored insulation. Or consult the Body Electrical section of a 2nd gen 4Runner Factory Service Manual, it usually shows locations of things like relays and ground points (that is how I found the location on my 1st gen).
