Headlight issue 1992 Toyota pickup

Hello, I have a 1992 Toyota x-cab 3.0 4x4 and I am having headlight problems, when my switch is on bright I only get dim lights, when I pull the switch back to dim the headlights go out completely but the bright light indicator remains lit, the park lights and interior lights all stay lit up only the headlights go out, I am new to this forum and would appreciate all the info I can get, I have owned several toyotas but never had this problem before! Thanks again!

Not sure exactly what could cause this but IF your headlight circuit is similar to the 22RE's, there is a fuse for left headlights and another for right headlights. Because of the nature of headlight bulbs (low and high beam filaments sharing a common terminal), one blown fuse would not necessarily cause lights on that side to go out, rather because of filament interconnection between left and right bulbs, both sides may still light up, bit not very bright. A combination of a busted fuse and one or more busted filament may cause "weird" issues. Too many scenarios/combinations to analyze.

A simple and thorough thing to do would be individually check headlight fuses and each high beam and low beam filaments on both bulbs.

Just a quick bit of additional diagnostics.

Usually when the contacts are dirty/faulty you can get the high beams to function in flash mode. eg pull the stick backwards past the low beam setting. This only indicates it's not somewhere else in the wiring if it works, if it doesn't it's not very helpfull but something to check.

Well when I pull back on the stick the head lights do come on but I think it's only the dims not the brights, I could be wrong but the headlights do function when I pull back on the switch, my first step was going to be change the switch anyway! So maybe that'll solve my issue!

The manual, covers testing the switch. And Terry did a nice write up on repair/cleaning. No need to repair it if it's not broke, and definatly no reason to replace it if it can be repaired.

I'm not bitter just sad, the local yard crushed a nice ext cab and frame recently.
