I've asked this before but never got a straight answer..Can i take the Header off of my 1980 20R motor and put it onto my 1986 22R motor???at the website below is says that the exhaust is swapable..but its talking about exhaust manifolds..not headers...the only difference in the bolt pattern between the two heads (that i know of) is that on the bottom, in the middle, of the 22r manifold there are 2 bolts...on the 20r..there is only one..

NOW on the header on the 20R..there is NO bolt in the middle...(the bolt hole is there...(it has to be)..)..but there isnt a bolt in it...so..does that mean that i could put it on the 22R head..and it not leak right there..

if not what are the possibilities of drilling 2 holes in the exhaust header?..to make it work..

i mean come on guys..i have no money to be spending on extra parts..and this should give me a little more pep..and a lil better mileage..(along with the rest of my exhaust system).and i cant afford a new header..especially when i have one on the other truck..lol..will this work or not?????????

 

I should think you could drill a couple holes in it. I drilled the same two in my cast iron manifold.

 

thats kinda what i figured..but i wasnt sure....and somebody needs to convince my dad to put it on the 22R (we're replacing the head so this is a GREAT time to put it on there)..because he says its pointless..i told him its pointless to put the EXACT same stuff back on the truck..that screwed up the first time..but he doesnt listen to me...so if anybody else can vouch for putting a header on a truck to make it perform any better..please chime in also..lol

 

It depends what header, and where you want power/torque. The best for low rpm torque is a long tube header, or the stock manifold.

 

it is a long tube header..im mainly looking for a little bit better mpg's..of course..more power is always need with the R series motors..LOL!..and..i want it for the sound...an exhaust system totally changes when u throw a header on it..i know my '80 toyota 4x4 did.LOL..

i can also throw a $20 cutout on it..maybe even cable operated..just to scare people that come wizzing by me on the interstate..LOL!!!..and for the cruise nights...everybody thought i had a 383 chevy under the hood of my '80 when all i had on it was the header..no exhaust..lol

Why not just get a header made for the 22R/22RE cylinder heads?

edit: just reread your thread, youd' rather use the 20R header cuz you have it already. I say try drilling the hole if you don't have any use for the header otherwise. If you do, then you could end up ruining a good header.

Drill slow and use WD-40 or some other oil to keep the drill cool, shouldn't have any problems. Drill it big too, with the heat expansion you could end up breaking the bolt or cracking the header if you just drill it big enough for the bolt at ambient temp.

 

because money is tight(as always)..if i had the money to spend on a new i header...i certainly would..but i dont...and this one was free.(it came on the '80 20R)..so i dont really have to spend any money..besides a gasket..so yea..basically free..lol..

 

So I would assume that any benefits you saw on your '80/20R you would see about the same on the 22R engine.

 

yea..i'll drill the holes i need..and try to make it work..if it dont work..i still have the stock manifold for the '86 22R..and i have a spare 20R stock manifold..so i'll be good if the drilling dont go to good..lol..

Will Do!...after i get the holes drilled that i need...i'd like to paint it...i seen somebody say something about some paint that was rated for up to like 1500*..idd how hot the header would get..if anybody knows..point me in the direction of some paint i can get to paint it!..would Dupli-Color high temp engine paint be enough??..it rated for like 500*+
