its pretty tough to get these trucks stuck, but you can do it. Now if you really want to get through ANYTHING pick up some chains.

ugghh..i wish i would have video taped me and my friends in the walmart parking lot last year after an ice storm hit eastern oklahoma..

it was THE best couple of weeks i have ever had..sooooo mucchh fun..we had the only trucks at our school that could get around in the snow (he drove a lifted '96 ford on 33's) and i had my '86 on the 31" swampers

you could stick it in 4wd...and do some AMAZING donuts on about 4in of ice

we even unloaded the 4wheelers in the middle of town at the walmart parking lot and starting ridin around on the ice...the police couldn't even get around on the ice (they didnt have trucks last year...now they do lol)..it was the funnest week of my life to say the least..

 

what are your guys opinions on driving with the hubs locked all the time, and throwing it into 4wd hi when needed? I know that the transfer case is not synchromeshed, so I should be moving less than 5mph (I'm usualy completely stopped, or rolling) when I engage 4wd, which is fine by me, BUT I don't want to have to run outside to lock my hubs..

I have manual hubs, and an open front diff..

 

locked rears are great for drifting.

 

driving with ur hubs locked isnt a big deal i wouldnt do it on a daily basis cuz it will put more miles on ur front differential gear but just lock them up on bad weather days and it should be fine just keep an eye on ur front diff fluid

 

heres my toys parking spot at the house last winter got stuck once when i hit the packed snow from the plow truck it high centered it on the skid plate! with my 31s and opens front and rear

 

Yeah I know. I was a stupid teenager I know better now! I drive like 40, 50 tops when theres snow and its dark when driving on the Parks hwy. Goes to show how much one can grow up when being out in the world for a year.

 

I lived on a Class vi road in NH for 11 years, it was 1/4 mile and steep. Snow is funny sometimes it was easy, sometimes it was like DANG am I in 4x drive? I got stuck twice. Ice storm Fahgetah bowt it, i parked and walked.

 

That was my plan, lock the hubs before I need them.. I'm working at a ski hill in a decent snow belt this winter, so it might get nasty real quick on me..
I changed my diff fluid last week in anticipation of lots of 4wd usage this winter..

 

Hm, I drive all winter with my hubs locked, never had a problem in 5 years and you can engage 4wd as long as as you are below 55mph.

 

Do you have the ADD? Can I do that in my first gen non-ADD transfer case?

 

No. My '93 p/u was factory manual hubs and my '95 4runner is manual hubs converted. Oh and any '86+ t-case should be shift-on-the-fly...I think. I never had a problem with my '88 4runner

I'm locked F/R with 32x11.50s, can handle the speed limit or more in any conditions.
Just gotta relearn how to drive with lockers.

 

I'm amazed no one is pointing out tires! With the right tires you can do 60 on ice and not have any worries, with the wrong tires 16 is going to be trouble!

Oh and I leave my hubs locked from about October to about March with no troubles.

I'm running 33x 12.5'. Lovin' the traction on snowy roads / ice. Not so hot in the deep snow (mud tires would be great) but still tons better than my old longtrails.

here in Ohio they go great in all but the VERY DEEP (over 16")
we have very wet lake effect snows and it wants to slow you down
was up in MN had about 20" of fresh powder, felt like 6" of ohio snow

Manual Locking Hubs + INCAB controlled ADD system
I leave them open till I see a need for them
Lock them manually and drive till i need 4X
Shift the T Case into 4x on the fly
Then Shift the ADD system ON - on the fly.
Works VERY WELL for me in my application
