I had been considering doing the zuk mod since my yota is a victim of the rear sag from the flattened leaf springs. I was talking it over to a buddy of mine from work when he mentions that he had set of jeep factory springs laying around and he'll give them to me for free! After about 2 weeks of finally being able to arrange a time to go get them, I got them and are in the bed of the 4runner.

 

I'm very with my Zuk mod. But it rode like a tank until I installed new shocks. Also had to crank up the T-bars to level her out.

I did the "no cut, except for the springs" ZUK mod some years ago, but hadn't really had her loaded down much until last weekend. I had it filled to the max or more with firewood, and the ride was great. So glad I did it.

 

I have jeep cherokee front coil springs on my 4runner, i think they 18'' long and cut them down to 14'', i still didn't like the rake on the rear, so, i cut them to 12'' and that was perfect for me.

 

oh ok, that's something I wasn't sure of... the rears are 14" and the fronts are 18" from the ones I got. I was gonna use the rears since they are wider on one end. Should I go with the fronts instead?

 

I'd use the rears since they are already 14'', if you don't like the way it looks you can cut them down to 12'', or if you like the rear to look really tall then use the fronts. You have plenty of material to choose from and play with.

 

Good low-cost solution. I'm very happy with mine. Just remember that you need to find the right spring length and load rating (pounds per inch) for your desired lift. If you end up with too much lift you would need to lift the front to even the lift, like LITLRED did.

Yes, because springs support the load, but shocks absorbers are needed to smoothen the ride by absorbing the shocks.

 

so should I use the front springs or the rear springs? either way i'm gonna end up cutting them to 12" but just not sure which set is better....

 

To save you from having to do too much trial and error, best to:
1) First specify which 4Runner you have
2) Specify exactly which Jeep model-year you got the springs from, then
3) Fellow members who used exactly same springs on their 4Runners can comment how they cut it down to, and what kind of lift/rake they got.

Cool. Then you could probably research pounds per inch rating of your Jeep springs, correct?

What's your frame to leaf-pack distance (see pic below)? This is good baseline.

For reference to help estimating expected lift, IF you know your spring rating (pounds per inch)...

Twelve-inch springs rated @ 125 pounds/inch lifted my 1986 22RE DLX 1.5inches (from sag).
No Noticeable Rake!

Wheel rim to wheel well rim in front: 14"
Wheel rim to wheel well rim in rear: 12.5"

Frame to Leaf Pack:

Before: 7.75 Inches
After: 9.25" (As of 22Mar2013)
Lift: a nice even 1.5 inches!

 

thanks for your input, i'm gonna go with the fronts and cut them down to 13" instead of 12. I do want to the ride to be soft and these springs, from what I've researched, are soft and not too stiff. I'm gonna start today, i'll post up my before and afters...
