Gear RPM Difference?

Right now I have stock 4.10s with 33x12.50s on my 4Runner. When I'm ACTUALLY going 55 I'm turning around 2200rpm in fifth gear. When my speedometer says I'm going 55 I'm turning about 2400rpm. I want to regear a little bit lower, but I do a lot of driving on 55mph roads (obeying the speed limit too, of course), so I don't want to be turning tooo many rpms going that speed in fifth gear. Can any of you bright guys tell me around what rpms Ill be turning if I go to 4.88s? 4.56s? I'd like to do a little comparison. Thanks guys.

Your math is backwards, switching to 4.56 or 4.88 will increase the engine revs for the same vehicle speed. With 4.56 2200 rpm will become 2450, with 4.88 it'll be 2620. If you want to lower the revs switch to 3.90, or 3.73.

You should have 4.88s to bring the gearing back to stock.

Thanks guys. Eric I meant that I want lower gearing, I just wanted to see how much more rpms I will be turning, and I don't want to regear so much lower that Im turning 3000 rpm going 55.

I only had stock gearing with 31s for about a month on my 4runner when I had a regular 22RE with 360,000 miles on it. And I have more power now with stock gears and 33s with my Turbo 22RE. So if I get 4.88s and return to the stock ratio it's gonna feel like a frickin race car compared to what I'm used to. Anybody ever driven a Turbo 22RE with stock gears and tires? It has to be pretty fast.

Let it rev, and yeah, its fast, for an 90 (4cyl)/ 120 (V6) 4500 truck. Seriously though, rev the engine, there's lots of power up from about 2700- 4??? rpm.

IIRC the peak power for the 22re is something like 4700rpm.

I wouldnt bother taking it over 5 grand.. the 3vze on the other hand

I read the sweet spot for the 3vze is around 3200 (power vs effeciency), I would imagine a smaller displacement engine from the same engineer would be similar or higher. The article i read (the magazine you get from 4wheelparts .com after you order) said the engine will be more effecient if you are not lugging it but also not over revving it. It also had a bunch of formulas for gearing and rpm's and a bunch of interesting tech stuff.
