Trace the lines. The filter is on the block on the passengers side if it is a 22re.

put a fuel pressure gauge in, it should show if you have a leak. basically, if you have a leak, it will read low fuel pressure. or if they have the florescent dye they use for leaks available for gas, use that.

The vent tube for the vapor caninster goes into the frame there. Canister may be leaking.

Follow the rubber hose off the bottom of the charcoal canister, it runs down and gets stuffed inside the frame rail. Normally only a vent hose to let in fresh air to replace gas fumes in the cannister as the engine sucks them in. However, if the cannister gets clogged or something else goes wrong (see FSM for troubleshooting steps) gas can leak out that hose off the bottom of the cannister. Cannister should have two lines on top, Purge line to the throttle body, the tank line goes to the tank and the 3rd hose off the bottom is the vent:

Can you hook up the lines and just delete the canister?

The cannister is part of the emissions control, so legally no, can't do that. Plus it is a reasonably "good thing" to have, the cannister sucks up gas vapors from the tank as it heats up during the day. Then when the engine is running, those fumes get sucked back into the engine to burn. Without the cannister, those fumes just go up into the air and with the price of gas these days, that may be a costly proposition.
