If I had to take a shot in the dark not knowing yours is like my '90 and I take for granted that you have made sure you do not have a fuel leak anywhere like in any of the hard line to the engine then all that being true I would have to say take a hard look at the Gas Vapor Recovery lines coming back to engine compartment from the gas tank/filler neck and see if you have a broken/deteriorated/dis-connected hose that could be or would be releasing gas vapor from your tank , mine has a charcoal filter at the fiewall and if the hose to this were to go bad (from the tank) then I am sure I would smell gas vapor .
Hope this helps a little otherwise I will check back and see where you are smelling it and see if I can offer any other ideas .

strike a match!.....Just kidding
Sorry, I just got paid, and tomorrows Friday so I'm in a particularly good mood. Somebody was going to say it sooner or later and I figured it may as well be me.

From what I have read the line leaving the bottom should be tucked in hole in the frame , trying to get you guys the test proceedure for it , I remember seeing it somewhere

I would imagine that it would since that is used for the vent on the canister , check and see if you have a hole in your frame rail near that hose( the end of it that is ) as from what I have read that hose should be tucked in the frame rail to prevent that problem .
