Electric lockers __Yea or Ney__ ? ? ? ?
Hey Guys ____ need some opinions on the ?Toyota electric locker?. They have been converted to a manual system via ?push- pull cable?. I?m wondering how dependable they would be. Also, how they would compare with other lockers ? manual or auto?. Are there any other hidden problems associated with this system in particular that I wouldn?t encounter with other lockers systems(dependability, durability). Also what would be a fair price?Your opinions are greatly appreciated ,thanks in advance ._____BAYRUNNER

I had an e-locker in my 2000 4runner and loved it. I currently have a detroit locker in my 86 and it is great off-road, and absolutely atrocious on-road. I will be fitting an e-locker in it this winter. As for the manual cables, I have no personal knowledge but I've read postings from a few people that didn't seem too pleased with them. I think the main complaint was binding up...

Just do the regular E-locker. Manual cables can suck because they become difficult to pull, and if they are hit by trail debris or rocks the tension can cause them to lock/unlock, or break completely. Ive put my E-locker through some serious hell and it is still fine, along with all of its electical components, more then i can say for alot of other things on the truck.

I had the cable made up locally. 1/4" diameter solid core cable, 1/4"-28 threaded ends, teflon lined, nylon/plastic cable housing.
Reconfigured the shift shaft housing, [ little aluminum housing on the outside of the E-Locker housing ], and added about 2" of stainless shaft to the existing shift shaft, bored the aluminum housing and added an 'O-ring" groove, 'O -ring' sealed the stainless extension shaft to the aluminum housing.
Made my own shifter inside the cab, mounted next to the other shift levers.
I'll post pics of the shifter, and maybe [ if I crawl under the 4Runner the extension too ] tomorrow.

They can be found in 3rd Gen 4runner and Tacoma's here in the US. I would think that the Surf and Hilux's in your region of the same era would have them as an option as well but I don't know that for a fact. To fit one into an older axle does require some mods - you can read the details here.
