fuel injector cleaners, additives

Does anyone have any opinions good or bad on these? Fuel injector treatments added to the gas tank?

I usually don’t believe in stand alone additives and try to buy gas that already has an additive package (Shell, BP, Exxon, Mobile, etc.).

I did try BG K44 just recently after reading about it here. I didn’t notice a huge change in performance (if any). In my daily driver, fuel economy was .5 MPG better (which could have been from me coasting down hills more frequently). I have not had to fill the 4Runner back up yet (wife’s car) so I don’t know if there was any change in fuel economy on the truck.

Good gas is the best, as Element says, I think. I use Redline every 6K oil change just to be sure. If there is any improvement in mileage after a treatment, it is pretty small. I get an average of 20.4 in my 94 4X4.

My personal opinion...

I had recently had my injectors refurbished. (I'm in the middle of rebuilding, so they were being removed, anyway). I received flow charts of before and after the testing of the injectors. Before, only two of the four had adequate flow. And, after....of course....they were all 100%. I'd tried, prior to this, every well known, reputable injector cleaner on the auto parts shelves (not including BG 44K....not available here) and from the "before" results I've concluded the cleaners didn't do squat. That is not to say it didn't actually do something as I have know idea how well they were flowing before any injector cleaner was ran through. But, I will say compared to actually having them rebuilt, it's kind of a waste of money considering how well they work now.

BG 44k cost over $20/can and does work and shouldn't be confused with the cheapie fuel system cleaners.

I've used a can once a year in all my vehicles for the last 12 years or so and it's good stuff. It really did a good job of keeping my flow rates of my injectors in my Eclipse GSX at 100% (I had a datalogger showing this) performance over 100k miles and never had them cleaned.

Hmmm....I might have to try harder to find that, then. Maybe it will work for my '92.

A lot of the improvements from fuel additive type treatments comes from the scrubbing action on the intake valves.

Removing injectors for cleaning works best.

Otherwise, you can run the truck until the gas light is on, then add the stuff to the tank, and run as far as you dare, then add a gallon, and run as far as you dare and then fill up. Just don't run the tank dry, that causes all sorts of other problems (like an overheated fuel pump!)

What this does is run the EFI cleaner through at maximum concentration, and the extra gallon of fuel afterwards serves to flush the stuff out of your tank so that it doesn't sit in your fuel system for too long. The stuff is corrosive, that's it's job.

I usually don't use fuel injector treatments for my cars. What brands of fuel injector treatments can you recommend? Thanks!

That is the type of information that persuades me. I’ll keep that in mind.

The only “data logging” I do is tracking my fuel economy. And I stopped believing the butt dyno years ago.

Good info, X.

Sorry to rub it in, but $13-$14 a can here!

Thook,

Check http://www.bgfindashop.com

Several Ford and Chevy dealers in my area had it. Looks like there are four spots in Fayetteville if you live up that way.

I don't think any of them will do a 100% job of cleaning already clogged injectors, but I think just about any of them will work to some degree. If you use gasoline with an additive already in it then a bi-yearly solvent wash should keep them relatively clean & flowing well enough.

I have always used STP fuel system cleaning additives! With my last engine I notice that it ran smoother because it also boosts the octane.

If you've been using a good injector cleaner starting at low mileage then they will do the job but if you are starting with a higher mileage truck that didn't have this done the injector cleaner will only work so well but BGs IMO is the best solution short of pulling the injectors.

Three of those are dealerships, but the "Greased Pig" is a service shop right where I travel a lot. I'll check it out. Thanks for the tip......and love the avatar.

My 96 2.7 was running bad. after 2 cans of Sea Foam. it didn't help. Had to get injectors professionally cleaned. There is a screen inside injector, once it's clogged injector cleaner won't clean it. Getting injector cleaned cost me $10.00 each.
