So recently i was off-roading with a few buddies and i ended up jumping my 91 pickup..What ended up happening is i bent my diff. forward and broke both of the cv axles. i was wondering if anyone here has a suggestion on what i should do about thisand what would be the best approach?

Well now would be a real good time to do a solid axle swap because your maybe going to have to remove the whole front axle to get it fixed.

Though without seeing it that would be just a guess Who knows what else is bent and twisted.

 

Park and inspect it for more damage.

did you bend or break the diff mount brackets or the frame?
you have some metal fab, welding and or metalwork ahead of you.

you have to take it apart and see.

you must have drove it like you stole it !! lol

if you are gonna jump an ifs truck you better spend some money with total chaos or blazeland like you just learned the hard way.

 

might be cheaper too.

^hahaha Might be a good time to figure out what metal prices are these days. $11/100lb last I checked.

 

I assume the mount that caused the problem was the one at the front on the frame crossmember, where the differential cover bolts to it. That's the only weak link in the system as I see it, the other 2 mounting points are far more sturdy. IOW, I highly doubt you bent anything else(significantly, and/or enough to matter).

And I find it hard to believe that you merely bent the front mount. With that much force applied, you must have sheared the mount from the frame(atleast partially). Which I've done myself. That's how I know it can happen, and how it can cause the front axle to move forward(and tilt up & down).

What to do? Replace the front-most differential mount bracket. Preferably modifying it in a way to give it more strength.

Such as...using 3/16" steel plate...instead of the flimsy semi-boxed sheet metal contraption that the factory put there.



Haven't had a problem with it since.

Without some more information it is not possible to comment with any real advice. Photos would be very helpful. I do however think that it should be repaired as I would hate to see the rig go to the Yota Graveyard. Replacing the diff mounting brackets and CVs from a wrecking yard shouldn't be all that expensive. There are three brackets involved and stock CVs are easy enough. If some tabs on the frame are broken, bent, damaged or what ever it can still be fixed.
