Yes, You will bang it on stuff.

2 popular options.
Mount a tank between the frame in under the rear of your runner.
Or mount a fuel cell. You can mount it inside or underneith. Just vent it really well if its inside so you dont die

I have a tank from an astro van that should be replacing mine. People will give you crap for it saying its dangerous. It is if its in a race car, or not vented properly. Otherwise go for it

My friend in a 3rd gen has ran into clearance issues with his tank.
He tries to follow me in my single cab taco (a 3rd gen 4Runner and my 99 Taco have the same wheelbase, his gas tank is 2" lower than mine) and can't take a few of the lines I do.

Just go wheel it and decide for yourself if its too low or not

Can't you move it up if you have a body lift?

I guess it really depends on the kind of wheelin you do. I rarely ever hit mine out in the local deserts even when crawling around in the washes but I dont rock crawl which I can see it as being WAY too low for that.

Body lifts may suck for a lot of things but they allow you to tuck and stuff things like gas tanks and other belly junk, as well give engine bay clearance for turbos and such.

Body lifts just to make your truck look bigger are lame .

You BL nay sayers be sure to scroll down a couple of post in the thread he linked and read what I think about that. Also so know that with the motor mounts lifted and a low profile crossmember Bud Built cross member made for a 2" drive train lift the BL will allow me 4" of ground clerance at the T-case.

I have always liked your rig rob. I follow the thread eventhough i dont post often

I would just rather take the path that fillsrunner did with his build. Made a whole new tunnel, and did alot of custom sheet metal work.

But i do realise that not everyone has access or the ability to do that. But it is simply my favorite way of doing things.

If anyone uses body lifts, your rig is not going to blow up or anything lol, thats not what im saying. Its just that the negatives out weigh the positives imo. But you definatly did it right rob, not just going for height and making it a mall crawler.

From: Bryan Tx,
Thanks for the compliments on my build. I watch yours also, the 4.3 swap came out good.

Cutting out and raising the trans tunnel is another good way to raise the motor and T-case, but not something I would do on a street driven rig. I have seen a few and the heat, noise and vibrations turned me off a little. Also that would not help with the gas tank problem on a 1st gen 4runner. The only other way I would consider is to ditch the tank all together and mount a fuel cell in the cargo area, which would cost a pretty penny and you would loose a good portion of your cargo space.

If you have access, just cut the brackets, take a couple inches off, weld em up. That'll raise it a little.

No problem, you do nice work.

Another thought: Arn't pickup 2wd gas tanks smaller to make up for lack of ground clearance? I think I heard of some putting them in 4wd PUs to make for some more room, wonder if it would be done with the runner. Scratch that, I know it can be done, wonder if anyone has done it. The only downfall would be the smaller tank.
