so you've got scored cylinder walls.
if you don't have the proper tools to check the depth of the gouges, take it to a shop. then maybe talk to engnbldr.
Yes. Thats the bad cylinder. Not really scored...just feel weird in one spot. No scratches whatsoever. And honestly it looks like someone spilled coke and let it sit on the wall and thats what the bottom of the cylinder looks like.

I'll have to take it to a shop. I'm going to go into a shop today and see what they say. I won't have the block with me though.

@HelliphinoN8......
He's/we've been down the headgasket road already with diagnosing this puppy. It's way early on in the thread, though.
Took the parts out of the box to make sure they were there. Thats it. Everything is still nice and neat.

I think I just need to take some pics/and or go to the shop.

So, #3 cylinder has some pitting on the wall?

Yes...it does. Took it to a machine shop today and he stuck his finger in the cylinder and immediately said "Yep, needs to be bored!" So its $100 for boring...and $25 for cleaning (hot tanked)

Also, he is charging me $60 more for putting new bushings in the pistons and he said that over time they wear out and they need to be bored so he said it needs to be done. And he's going to put the connecting rods on the new pistons with the new bushings. <- Is he just bs'ing me?

Cylinders are going to be .020 over now. One step closer

Who's "he" and what machine shop? And, by "bushings" do you mean the wristpins?

yes he is b'sing you. 100 for the bore and 25 for the hot tank is all you need to pay him.
he's only working the block. deal with the pistons separately
if he's gonna bore all 4 .020 over, you will need new pistons, and consequently new wristpins and connecting rod bushings.

Thats what I figured. I think after this work is done I'll take the pistons and new wristpins and connecting rod bushings somewhere else.

Is that a bad deal for all? Okay odd question...but will I need to hone the cylinders after I get it back from the machine shop?

Okay...emailed engnbldr and they will do the exchange. They are only like 60 miles away from me....so I'm trying to figure out if I should just drive up there. (my motorcycle gets 60mpg!) and my brothers car usually gets around 40.

Okay...block is done! It has to be bored .030 over. At .020 it still had a nasty hole in it...and now its nice and clean.

Will I have to hone it?

Thanks!

Cool!!! Thanks dude!!

Kirk, I though honing was done just to knock off glazing if you weren't going to bore. Apparently that's wrong, though.

No I haven't. I might pick it up tomorrow. I'll just have to see. I'll talk to him then. So what about honing the sleeves? What needs to be done to the pistons/rods?

point blank:
the cylinders have been bored oversized... so appropriately sized pistons need to be supplied... and rings to match the bore and pistons are needed as well.
boring may add some cleareance since the boring is a 'rough' machining process and 'honing' is a 'fine' process. it is techinally possible for the honing process to add another .010 (ten thousands) to the bore diameter

there is some leeway between the piston size and the ring size
