..Then its all good! Did you get an aftermarket or oem cat?

Did he remove a toyota oem cat from your truck? If so, I hope he paid you for it, or you held onto it!

glad to hear everything's back to normal. likely, it was the ecu causing the engine to run poorly until it adjusted to the repairs and all.

Might be your O2 sensor

I had a similar problem with my 88 22re, and it turned out to be the O2 sensor!
Test your sensor and make sure you rule it out. I will try and find my smog test results and post them.

just joined, a little late, but here are my $0.02: nox levels are high, due to high compression being built up carbon deposits in the cylinder, overheating which will cause pinging and high nox levels. but for smog issues, the number one reason why most people fail smog is a clogged egr passage, or the egr valve on these old toyotas have gone south. these older 22re engines don't have anything but vacuum controlling the egr, i may have to take a better look to make sure its just vacuum controlling it. you can test it by applying vacumm at the top of the valve, which is located between the firewall and the back of the intake manifold, just remove the little vacuum hose to the valve, attach a vacuum pump, raise it up to about 2000 rpm, draw vacuum and wait for a stumble in the engine, should run rough, or drop in rpm or even stalling the car. if you fail for nox, consider a top engine cleaning, along with removing and cleaning out the egr pipe/passage way, if it fails egr tessing, a new egr valve. consider smogging your car on a colder morning, and insist on the technician to have the cooling fan blowing, make sure your timing is right, if you can, retard it to the max, which is 3 degrees retarded past the correct timing that is legal and your allowed that much. put in the highest octane gas you can get which is 92 octane, burns colder, causing less nox levels. remove your ac compressor belt. put on the skinniest tires you can find, remove as much weight off the car as possible, air up your tires to at least 40 psi. change the oil, use thicker oil, and if all fails, maybe consider a new catalytic converter. you can test the cat. i don't want to drag this any further, if anyone needs info on cat testing, pm me. hope it helps someone pass smog.
