Engine Surging

Alright, thanks to your help I got my rebuilt 22re to run. When it is cold, however, it surges pretty badly. When I jumper the vacuum (as you do when timing it) or disconnect the TPS it stops surging. It also stops surging when it warms all the way up. I have sprayed starting fluid all over and gotten no reaction. Any ideas what it could be? I am pretty sure all the vacuum lines are hooked up correctly, but not positive, would any wrong make it do this?

90... and I understand low coolant can cause this, i did run it low, but have since filled it up and it is still doing it.

what vacuum lines are you 'jumpering' to set the timing?

I jumpered TE1 and E1... as the FSM says to. Think I may have found the culprit however.... Appears I have a broken Coolant Temp Sensor on the front of the Intake. Would this possibly cause surging? Guess I dont really know what that sensor does if the Coolant temp sender is actually on the block. If not, I guess Ill be taking an ohmeter to my TPS.

Let me know, Thanks.

i have the exact problem as you, but i know what the problem is for me. The egr where bolts to intake is not totally seated causing vacumm leak. when warm the surge is gone. It really only surges when its cold and right before it warms up. When the rpm is about to drop thats when it starts surging. But maybe you have a vacumm leak like me?

Its got a new gasket in there, it shouldn't... but i will check it. Shouldn't spraying it with starter fluid cause some kind of reaction if it were that though?

yup.. i sprayed carb cleaner and it did nothing at first but once it was warm and the engine had a steady low idle, you can hear the rpms going up when sprayed there. I also have new gasket..lol just a thought. It might not be there but you could have a vacumm leak anywhere
