Engine noise opinions ( w/ Video )

1993 4runner 3VZE, 171k, Manual. I am gearing up to swap the Timing belt and water pump next week, I been hearing this "rubbing" noise for some time now and can not find it. I really noticed it after doing the valve cover gaskets. Initially I thought it was the fan rubbing the plastic shroud. or warpped/bad pully on the power steering. Not the case here. Sound is loudest at the bottom front. I am hoping to have the front end took apart and a general idea of what i may in for. I have replaced all belts except timing. The noise gets faster as the engine RPMs increase.

Thanks

Kyle

90% sure your timing belt is either rubbing on your front plastic cover or the rear metal backing.

Alright. BC 4Runner,good job..Check this out. Got into the timing belt today. I am seriously shocked that my timing wasn't seriously messed up. I never would have thought that sound was timing belt rub. Sounded metallic to me.. Never the less, I found the tensioner pulley was wasted, wasn't holding any tension. The belt was so loose you could freely spin the #1 pulley up top. The back side of the Timing belt was all ate up. The water pump had been leaking for awhile I guess, I just never saw any puddles. Thank goodness for this forum.. all the weeks of reading and searching made this job a breeze so far. I got it tore down and ready for reassembly in about three hours. Thanks yotatech and good diagnosis again BC!

I still dont see how this dude holds tension on the timing belt.. I mean, its just a single bolt unless i'm missing something..The thing looks new!

Also, I think I kinda sorta mabey should have titles the thread a little different and mabey should have waited till after I had gotten this far to post... Rookie mistake.., sorry :-)

Ah yes... the hydrolic tension device which looks like a small shock..

Glad I figured that out :-)

It isn't running to hot now, that's a separate issue tho.

Good call on changing out that pulley. Did you double and triple check the timing belt wasnt rubbing on the plastic cover OR the metal backing??

I the 3.4 I swapped into my 4runner sounded identical to that, it turned out that the metal backing got bent a bit and the back edge of the belt was rubbing on it.

Try running it without the front cover for a bit just to see if you can pinpoint the noise

Also just reading through your posts again it sounds like your tensioner may be wasted...

If you can push it in at all it needs to be replaced. You should have to use a vice to push the rod back in to reset it.

Hey fellas, I replaced the tensioner already. T-Belt,both pulleys, water pump. BC I DID NOT see anything that would indicate any rubbing on the plastic or metal backing. HOWEVER, The old belt was chewed up on the back side a little. Any thoughts on the harmonic balancer possibly? I took of the skid plate and rolled under the truck while it was running, all the other pulleys spin straight n true, the bottom has a very slight, i mean very slight wobble. Can video if y'all want..
Thanks for the replies so far.

Found it... Its the AC compressor and/or AC belt tensioner.
Cut the belt, no more noise..
