Emmisions issues

Here is the lovely state of Ohio we have emissions check. Today I have failed it three times.

I have a 93 Toy P/U with the 3.0 manual tranny 4wd with 248,000 miles on it.

After first failure I ran seafoam through the truck and drove it about 60 miles

After second failure I drove it more (239 miles) till the tank was empty then put dry gas in the tank. Then I failed again for the third time.

Here is the messed up thing. The truck is running better than it has in a while. Idle is nice and smooth and no hesitations.

Spark plugs replaced in Dec along with wires, cap and rotor

entire exhaust put on July of last year cat and everything.

The engine has 248,000 miles on it and I have had no issues with it until now.

Last check last year I passed by a huge margin. This time around after every attempt the hydrocarbons keep going up whereas the CO and the other two things they check for have gone down after each test.

To pass I have to be below 174.0 ppm. The first time I was at 190.0 ppm, the second at 198 ppm, and the third time I was at 206.7 ppm

Anybody have any ideas? After today my truck is illegal since the registration runs out today. I am so mad it is not even funny.

i didnt pass with my 3.0 the first time i went. at what rpms did he run the test. over 3000 voids the test and if i remember correctly on factory gearing on a 3.0 5spd 31's stock first gear testing can be sketchy. pushing 2940
if that helps any.

having the injector cleaners like seafoam in your tank probably increase hydrocarbons, run a couple tanks through to clear them out, if that doesn't work maybe you are burning oil?? bad rings?

I have a 22re and went through a similar ordeal a few months ago just after I bought it. Mine's an 88 with 340,000+ though. My throttle body was really dirty, to the point that it wasn't closing all the way. According to the tech, the computer tries to compensate for the lean condition, dumping more fuel. Anyway, after cleaning it, my POS passed. Good luck.

If you could post your results for all measured values, it will help us determine your problem.

sounds like your egr valve is acting up. my 93 did that when i had to have it tested last year, turns out the egr was not operating correctly. replaced it and everything was where it should be.

Increasing gas mileage on '93-- 22re 4x4 yota

Can anybody please tell me a few inexpensive things to do to my '93 toyota 4x4-22re to improve my gas mileage? Only getting about 17 mpg with this ethonal gas. I was thinking maybe cold air intake, electric fan etc,but don't want to spend alot of money. Any help would be much appreciated..Thanks alot

Welcome to Yotatech.

Do you think you'd get better responses if you posted this someplace other than in a thread on "Emissions Issues"? (a 5 1/2 year old thread, at that)

While you're thinking about that, I'll say that I get 15mpg in town, 20 on the hwy. Many do better. If you drive 14,000 miles/year (the national average), increasing your mileage by 1 will save you about 50 gals of gas. You figure how much you want to spend (fans, intakes, etc.) to save that much.

Catalytic converter may be at the end of it's life if it's the original.
