egr questions
ok so i just got pinned with a final score of 1149.9 of a possible 966. on the NO emmisions test.. ive been reading lots of blogs about the egr and how to clean it im thinking this is my best bet for passing so , heres my question is it that hard to remove this it seems like the trouble is getting it off. what are the chances of damaging this while i remove it i know my way around a motor well enuff however *&^% does happen. is it best to fnd a junkyard one clean that up and do swap? any other tricks that might bring down my score other then removing this ? and just for the record its a 93 3.0 auto with 193 on the clock air blows cold sunroof and power just begging to be jacked up!!! just bought it for 1600.! i think i did prety well

I can not identify the reason why you think the EGR valve is bad. There is a good FSM on this site that describes how to trouble shoot the emission system. You can locate the problem and fix it by using this process. Just replacing parts based on intuition is not the way to go.
One quick test of the EGR valve is to connect vaccum to the EGR value port. If the engine dies or runs poorly, the EGR is OK. You can use a vaccum pump or a vaccum line from the intake manifold to do this test.
The EGR valve fasteners are usually corroded and are somewhat inaccessible. Junkyard emission parts are always a gamble. You may be able to clean the carbon from the existing valve, if that is the problem.
Usually these problems are vaccum leaks in the rather extensive collection of tubes and hoses, not the components themselves.
Good luck with this project.

What were the various numbers for CO, HC and NOX?
Has the truck been tuned up? I would look at tune up stuff before messing with the EGR. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air filter, O2 sensor.....catalyitic converter. My 89 with 175K used to pass with flying colors when it was tuned up.

Add a bottle of Techron concentrate to a partial tank of gas and give it the old Italian tune-up (run it hard for a couple days) to also blow out some carbon.
Have you checked the ignition timing?

as you stated earlier, if it blew a whole lotta smoke, then you might need to change your plugs. reason for this is because after a good cleaning with seafoam, all that carbon buildup that is being cleaned out will foul up your plugs...
