Driving RPMs Too High/Code 64 ?

Vehicle: 92' 4Runner, 3.0 4x4 A340H, 202Kmi rolling on 31x10.50R15 A/Ts, stock gearing. Headgasket, waterpump, Thermostat, Timing Belt done @ 182K. I purchased the rig back in late July from a local Mechanic/Shop owner, This is my first 4runner as I upgraded from a Jeep XJ.

My Issues:
At 65MPH with O/D on the truck is running right at or a hair under 3K RPMS
At 65MPH without O/D on the truck is running right at or a hair under 4K RPMS

Recently my OD light began to flash a Code 64, I took it to a family friend whom was in the Transmission Business for 30 years. We both took the rig for a drive test around town & on freeway, the A340 shifts Fine and hits all its shift points & has never had any issues shifting into OD. Stall speed is around 2700RPMS which is normal from what I've been told.

My Question: Is 3K RPMs @ 65 with OD on normal for 4runners ? (I'm used to my Exploders & XJs to be from 1800-2300 @ 65.) What would bring these RPMs up & why would I be getting a Code 64 is nothing is mechanically or electrically wrong w/ my Trans ?

Rev's are normal.
You'll have to check the FSM to see what a code 64 means.

Run your RE or VZ at those RPMs and see what it does if it'll make you feel better...

Ford, Dodge, Chevrolet,,, Toyota's are not.

I told the mechanic 3grand is just getting into powerband but took his advice & figured I'd ask here to be on the safe side. Now I just have to figure out WTF is up w/ that Code 64 if nothing is actually wrong.

he is correct about the power band, 150 hp at 4800 rpm with 180 ft·lbf of torque at 3400 rpm, these motors like rpms.

I also recently "upgraded" from a 1998 XJ which I totalled and am driving a 2nd gen 4runner with the 3VZE now..

Within a week of owning the 4runner I was trying to figure out how the hell I could swap in a H.O. AMC straight six/AW4/NP242 combo. Now I've just gotten used to the high RPM's, getting passed by grandmothers on their way to church, the terrible gas mileage (even compared to a Jeep!) and the tinfoil body panels. It's a toyota thing, I understand

Truth be told, the Toyota does feel like a solid vehicle but I think it'll take some time to get used to the power difference between the AMC straight six and the 3VZE

My 3VZE seems to purr at 4k on the highway. My speedo is busted, so I think I'm hitting around 120-130km/h. It's done many 8hr stretches at those revs, up and down some hilly highways, with no problems. Transmission gets a little warm through the floorboards (5spd), and the engine burns a bit of oil... but I love it.

^^ that sounds normal to me. My 3vze runs about 3000 at 70 mph, which is probably lower than average because of my bigger tires with stock gearing.

Thanks for the reply, I'm concerned of high rpms because i know my engine need some work, it suffers form that famous lifter noise these engines make.SHould i try and keep her under 65 mph because of the lifter noise?
also what tire size u put in your 4runner? and did it need to be lifted for them to fit?
I love the 4runner just think i should have gotten one with a 3.4

I have a 22re with 4.88's and 31 inch tires and I run 3K to 3.5K on the highway. Since re-gearing and adding the tires plus adding a V-6 Sr5 cluster I do not know my exact speed. Doesn't seem to be winding out at all though.
