So i reread the tread, and you mentioned taskled.com. Is the LED Dome Module from them what you are talking about for an already made one? Or is that still imcomplete?

Yes, that is ready to plug into the 30mm bulb socket. I run the older version of that one.

Holy old thread Batman!

I'm looking to upgrade my dome light in my 87 SR5 4runner with LEDs. I went to SuperBrightLEDs and looked for 30mm festoons and got this page:
http://www.superbrightleds.com/cat/f...r,3022,21,204:

Is this my best bet, for brightness?

DE3175 LED Bulb - 4 SMD LED Festoon

And, you remove the metal reflector in the housing, correct?

Side note, I'm thinking map lights too - but can't identify what kind of LED replacements they'd be? Should I get amber LEDs for them, and white for the dome? I have amber bulbs in my dash and like that look a lot - easy on the eyes at night.

HEY PHIL! hahahaha... That cracked me up! I've read up so much on this lately..... I'M GOING BAT/APE-SHIPS in the wind, hehe.... BUT, I FINALLY made sense of it... And after reading MULTIPLE 'reviews' from techie sites, etc... There ARE some products brighter than what www.superbrightleds.com have to offer... BUT, they ROCK in customer service and have very few instances of 'IT DIDN'T WORK!'.... That always can happen, but it shouldn't LIKELY happen, considering the odds ,...make sense so far? hahaha

OK, so, ................ You have a 1st Gen 4Runner Dome light, Map light and I'm sure 'deck lamp'... The latter being QUITE 'mock-worthy', haha... BUT, still, lemme share what I found, so far.

Dome;

Just as you said, from superbrightleds.com and I went with this;

************************************************** ***********

NOW, I wasn't sure if you'd done all those........... BUT, since you're now asking about the "MAPLIGHT", ..... that is a totally different ball of wax, lol...

It's a Ba9s bulb;

This is the one that I found, considering how I have to push it up in and then slide it in the post... leaving me only 30mm space to do so... Figured this one would be PLENTY bright, and actually it's 360 degree, so if I use Chrome paint or aluminum shiny side... I can get those opposite side LED's to reflect and aid in lighting out the Map Light..........

http://www.superbrightleds.com/morei...-360-degree/8/

I went with the Cool White.... the brightest, as they throw, always, seemingly, around 40% more lumen. BUT, .... I wouldn't be opposed to trying the 'Warm White', if these seem bothersome. LED's already are less glare-problematic, from what I can tell... And like Roger(4Crawler) told me in a conversation(quick email actually)..... "I really don't think I want the 2nd Gen Maplight, as it would be blinding light, right in my face... And my Luxeon is already bright enough for that, in my dome... I like the 1st Gen Maplight, it shines directly on my lap, where I need it, and not in my eyes"...... more or less, what he said, and I COULDN'T AGREE MORE!

They also make this one... which would be BLINDINGLY bright.......

http://www.superbrightleds.com/morei...9-led-tower/9/

35 Lumen each maplight? Uhhhhhhh, lol.... And that's considering, I believe, that it's 360*degree. (I have to ask them that, keep forgetting... But I believe if those were all facing one direction... the lumen value number would be different. Meh, maybe Roger will chime in on that, but anyway, you get the point... They're 9 LED's! lol... The PROBLEM on that one, personally, is that it's 35MM long, tip to tip... I have 30MM without bending, cutting or anything... I chose that one above this last one... I think it would be best.

************************************************** *******

I've changed my 1st Gen 4Runner Dome light for a 2nd Gen 4Runner version. The lever and contacts are WAY more solid and wont break... My handle on the 1st Gen one broke YEARS ago.. And most I see in the yard? BROKEN TOO! It took a TINY bit of cutting.... 1/2" or so on each side, making the hole a LIL longer... But it dropped right in and I couldn't be happier.

I will also be adding a 2nd Gen 4Runner Dome light to my rear Wiper Motor Cover... like RBX, and this guy as well.... (GREAT THREAD!) >>>>

http://forum.ih8mud.com/showpost.php...83&postcount=3

Read that thread if you have time.... He tapped into the door lock safety switch and that way when he pulls up the lock... the light goes on. (when set to door I believe)... You can also set it to come on with the doors open... or just on and off so you have constant hot dome light in the rear when camping, but doesn't come on automatically, etc., etc.... The possibilities are many... BUT I just have to figure out how to wire it all. PLENTY of wiring pics, etc., but they're usually from guys who know this and assume I KNOW what they're talking about/or the 3 steps before that! hahaha. I'll get it... Just wanna be sure, after all, cuz it's WIRING! lol.

PS> Not sure I'd wanna read to Amber... BUT, never know, it might be nice. Roger mentioned "Red is one of the best for night vision"... And it's safer, far as not interfering with driving if you're just glancing down here and there, ya know? I'll use the Cool white and report back. They should be in the mail box tomorrow! hahahha

You're a VERY intuitive and creative guy, Phil... I'm sure you'll come up with even more! lol.

PS> You don't remove the metal from the housing for the one you posted, far as I know... Roger removed it to put in his Luxeon bulb from taskled.com, ... I checked that site, but decided to just stick with what Blakefogt and RBX and many others had already done. THEY ARE BRIGHT, man... WAY improved over Factory... BUT, far as the dome? I've read even on the 'Warm White', people saying, "It's a LIL better than stock... BUT I wasn't impressed with the brightness. I have my dome on for reading, 90% of the time... Or setting something up camping... I really don't need anything but MORE light/enough light, ya know? Not sure Amber would give you TOO much more light over what you have. MAYBE would... But if you want something a lil softer, I'd probably try the 'Warm White', instead. Interested to see whatcha do

Anyone have any idea where to find a new replacement cover to go over the light? I went wipe the dust off of mine and it disintegrated in my hand :/

EDIT: also very jealous of your doors. I cannot find a set of doors with the split windows to save my life around here!

I went with a dimmer 4-LED festoon bulb in the door lights to help with night vision as well. In my '85, the lenses for the doors are red on top and white below, so used a white LED there and aimed the LEDs downward. Works well when you are wheeling at night and need to hop out to move a rock or spot someone. Enough light to see what is going on, but not enough to blind you for a few minutes.

I am fairly positive you can buy a new Dome Light Cover from www.toyotapartszone.com ........ But you'll have to call them and see. If they don't have a phone number.... Try www.dealerdirectparts.com and browse through the 'body' or 'chassis' section until you find one, then call to be sure.(dealerdirectparts is the only one I've actually spoken with, but I now USE toyotapartszone more often, as they ship faster, etc. Plus, I've always had exact part #s for what I needed by the time I found tpz.com... So, haven't needed to LOOK for a number on their site just yet. Just for reference... far as I can tell(as I've physically handled them all and installed them on both types).... >>> The 2nd Gen 4Runner dome light cover is exactly the same as the 1st Gen 4runner Dome light cover. In fact, I'm using my original dome light cover over the 2nd Gen 4Runner dome light that I installed(2nd gen switch, as I mentioned, is WAY more sturdy and less likely to break).

The point is, you can pretty much, either, 1. Find any 2nd Gen Dome light in a yard or pick your part, ...it will fit. My guess is that 84-95 4Runner Dome lights all will work.... Which should widen your range of 'available parts'. Also, if you have a 1st Gen 4runner, which I'm guessing you do... If your switch on the light hasn't broken yet? IT WILL! lol. 3 of mine have broken, and I'm VERY gentle with them. They're a design that they noticed were breaking by the time they changed in 90 4Runners..... I mention this because, IF you go to a pick n pull.... You'll find that the covers are 6.99$ and the ENTIRE LIGHT, WITHHHHH the cover is 8.00$! ...YEAH, that's what I said! lol. So just get the whole light and call it a day. I have a couple, and I might have an extra lens for you... have to check/verify with others that have asked me to grab them things/ whether they need them or not... But PM me and we'll talk, ok?

Yeah, I have those same door lights with the red over clear covers.... (You probably just saw that, sorry Roger ) lol.... That's a good idea on the turning them toward the ground... THEY DO help with lighting up the floor where I'm getting in, pointing straight at the floor/seat side... BUT, i will soon be putting in a 2nd and 3rd Gen Rear View Light... so I guess I could do that and have much better lighting on the ground, like you just mentioned. In that one pic, you can see if lights up the ENTIRE SIDE of my truck! lol... in fact, it lit up the whole garage over there. I could read the fridge magnet(at the end of my truck), lol.

I would like to eventually install rock/night lights... Obviously I can't get into the locations that you can with that beast you have, haha... But I do ok and surprise people, despite having only moderately modified IFS... And seeing that some of my trips are weeks at a time.. You know how it is, probably; You get somewhere or in the midst of being somewhere, at night, you need to MOVE, lol. helps to have underside lighting to get through and back on the road/to the trail, safely. (like in the Dunes at Olancha/OHV, and even on the Dolomite and Owens Dry Lake side, ya know?).. IAN(irab88) is using 12V bicycle lighthing LED Spot lights, like 'Off Road Lights on front'..... Roger? >>>> they're INTENSE! I am, honestly, really impressed how bright they are. Those are more spot, but since the LED's have so many options.... maybe a CREE XPE or something like that, with 180* beam angle.... maybe those would work better, in lil home made housings along the frame and under the front and rear bumpers? I would imagine 4 total would work fine... 1 on each 'side' of the truck and one on each end, front and back.

I would like those lights underneath, switch in the cab/relay in the bay..... So Roger, do you think I could use some of the many Pick your part interior lights with proper venting/but sealed with a lil RTV, to keep out moisture? I've seen, at the electrical store(Signal Electronics).... "Project Boxes".... I'm actually thinking of using one on my roll bar, just to add to the BLINDING when needed factor. Just would leave that one as a "BACK UP Assist" and rotatable on the roll bar pad, so I can point it down toward the back seat if they want it, etc.... I've read that, "while LED's dont get NEAR as hot... THEY DO need SOME ventilation, or they overheat and fail temorarily/sometimes permanently"....... If so, trying to think of a way to provide venting/while keeping 'water tight' factor as much as possible(up by Hot Creek in Mammoth... we move around a lot at night.... REALLY would be helpful to have lights out there, but you have to pass through water all the time as it crosses the road, ya know?

OK, could not tell in the lit up photos what color lenses you had. I originally put brighter LEDs in there but they were too bright. So went with the dimmest LEDs I could find. In fact I found the factory dome light bulb is a higher wattage than the door bulbs, something like 10 and 4 watts as I recall. Even the original dome bulb was too bright in the doors. I just like the LEDs for the lower power consumption, like in case a door is left ajar, it can take a week or two to kill the battery with the LEDs, vs. overnight for the regular bulbs.

Dang, ...I wonder if the guy is NOT GETTING ME... I asked for just the cover, ...and HE SWEARS that's what he's looking at on the diagram. Then again, parts dealers on line are WAY cheaper. THANKS, CHUCKAR!!! yeah, this PU in the PYPart was an 87 or 88... but I can't imagine the cover would be different. The Previa vans(earlier models), even the newer model pu's, like 91 and up, seemed to have the same size cover.... They were just all removed. NOW I find that a buddy has the entire assembly... So he's gonna let me have it, pretty sure. He removed his and installed a 2nd Gen 4Runner Maplight/Mirror Combo in his 92 PU. So he doesn't need it.

Thanks Chef - that's a ton of great info and photos - perfect!

I just ordered from SuperBrightLEDs.com and got the "Cool White" (that is the brightest, right??) for the dome and both doors. I'm holding off on deck lamp for now. I also got the smaller of the 2 Ba9s bulbs for the map light...that other one was WAY too many LEDs! I got one in "Soft white" and one in "cool white" - figure I can mount the one that's not to my liking on the passenger side

I'm stoked to put these in and report back!

Thanks again!

Hey Phil! My pleasure, sir! Partly what I live for.... To try and pay it forward on all the good stuff others do/make/give me, or just results I find playing around with things, lol.

I meant to update this....... The Ba9s bulbs I got with the 6 mini LED's on them? (it's in my build).... They work JUST FINE! lol... BUT, they're not super bright or anything(no pun intended, lol)... I think, that if I can find a way to easily mount a more direct bulb like a CREE XPE or something(100* angle for one bulb but pointing RIGHT AT that hole would be REALLY bright and out of the eyes still, ya know?).... like with an '90* angled elbow bayonet..... That when I plug it in it would point right down out that lens, ya know? I think that would be a bit brighter, for sure. BUT, I CAN read with these... They worked.

So anyway, yes.... I got these;

Name:  028.jpg
Views: 1614
Size:  108.2 KB

And here they are installed....

Name:  029.jpg
Views: 1642
Size:  57.7 KB

You can see they're not really brighter than the stock ones.. But they'll only use 31ma's and be WAY less hot than those 8W Ba9s's that were in there. Those, on for 1 minute, were hot enough that they nearly burned me to blister. THAT'S TOO HOT to be on for any period up in the roof. I've left them on for a full 24 hours, had no problem starting... BUT, with these LED 360* ones I posted? ... I could leave them on for a couple weeks, most likely, and she'd start up no problem... AND, they'll not get so hot that they could start a fire before they use up the battery! hahaha.

That tower one I posted? Yeah, it's probably brighter, to be honest... BUT, it would be a difficult fit by just manipulating it in there. It's 35mm from end to end... The space we have to get one in from the corner and then into the bayonet sleeve? 30mm... So I'd have to at LEAST bend it back.. and I don't want to drill out the rivets and move the bayonet sleeve, etc. ALTHOUGH.... the new light seems to be angled straight down, which for some reason has moved the light from the dead center of the seat, that the incandescent bulbs provided... to a LILLLLL more toward the doors... BUT, not enough that it would be a problem.. and actually, when I hold a paper in the middle of my steering wheel bottom..... it's DEAD ON focused to there.

Bottom line, my take on them? The ones I got in the pic? I LIKE EM just fine ... But I'll still try to get a LILLLL more light.

And yes, btw, sorry, .... they ARE the 'cool white'... those are the brightest. Warm white, I've read on EVERY SITE, "They just weren't any brighter and didn't impress me"... I don't LIVE in my car, and even when I'm in it for a week, camping... YES, I use them a lot... but when I use the lights, it's so I can SEE, AT NIGHT.. So why not, right? Plus, if I am camping out in the Dunes in Death Valley, near Hot Springs or OHV dunes or up in the sierras, ...... LAST thing I want is a dead battery, ya know? hahaha.

PS> I think the soft white one? It's not going to be enough light, Phil.... This one, as is, in cool white? It's JUST the same or a tiny bit brighter in a focused area.. The warm white will probably not be AS bright, ... but I'm VERY interested to see! Please report back, yes!

Right on, Phil

ALSO, wanted to add;

* Something that has to be noted, when grabbing/needing parts for these(they're often hard to find, etc., right? >>)..... www.superbrightleds.com ? UNREAL 'prompt action in shipping'! I mean.... both times now, I've ordered late at night, maybe 12am or later... The next morning they ship. Not only that, by the following day, from Missouri..... BLAMMO, lol.... in the mailbox it sits! THAT, to me, is a big part of it... But it REALLY helps to know that they're all still working for most people..... Built in a way that's solid and without cutting corners. I LIKE THAT TOO!

Oznium's panels might very well be the shiz-niz, lol... And I might try them as well. HOWEVER, 24$ for a single 2x2 maximum LED panel... Thin or not... it's just hard to click 'buy' on that one, hahaha. I KNOW, that's very competitive in pricing, comparatively, .... NO doubt on that. AND, I think their panel of 1.5x1 would fit in the rear dome set up... It might even fit in the Map light on the 1st Gens... hmmm. Still, 24$ EACH SIDE on the maplight? NO WAY I can justify that, that's the problem, for me anyhow, ya know? For a dome above my head? DEFINITELY would be worth it.

As I mentioned, www.autolumination.com has a 4mm thick panel of 48 LED's.... I think they're the type that are high power for their size... and wide beam angle the way they've set them up.... So I would imagine they're SUPER bright for that spot. I just read so many bad comments on techy sites on their refusing to return stuff, etc. So if I DID go with a panel... it would be Oznium or superbrightleds ........ no question.

I also mentioned another site that I know a buddy of mine, whom is doing body kits and lighting and etc., ya know? .... He's using them and they will actually make something to your design/odd shapes, etc. www.GoRECON.com ...... I think it's more 90 and up Toyota and such... BUT, hey, .... I'm using a 93 4Runner Dome light, right? hahaha. I'm not sure why they're so much more costly.... 24$ for 2 bulbs(always sold in sets of 2)... And it doesn't list lumen output or beam angle, etc. My buddy swears by them on quality, etc. BUT, .... for 24$ I can buy 4 of the 3022's from superbrightleds, ya know?

There's another company that's kinda new and is growing fast... I'll have to find it. They do TONS of the high end 100K dollars invested Japanese racer collectors, racers, etc., those cars. If I find it, I'll post it up... I think I put it in my build thread.
