differential extension ???

I saw a thread in the search site, about extending the breather on the rear diff.
Then, I forgot where I saw it. So I started searching again, and eventually found it, with the nice pics. However, there was one thread of a dude, who did an extension on both his front and rear diff.
Okay, sounds good i thought, and then another dude chimed in, and said if your 4rnr has independent suspensions, not solid axles, then you do not need to do the front diff. What say the experts, should I do the front, or not? I have 4x4, with auto locking hubs on the move, and I suppose indy suspension both front and back.

What year is your 4runner? '84 and '85 have solid front axles. '86+ have independent front and a 'solid' rear axle. I'm pretty sure you still need to extend the front diff.....

Regardless of Solid or IFS you still have to extend it if you run mud or water. On yours it still has the same 1 way valve on the front and rear. So it's always a good idea to extend them.

There used to be a post somewhere about using a nissan diff breather with the part number and everything. This was just a barbed fitting with metric threads that just replaced the factory little breather. That and a piece of 1/4 inch fuel line you could run it up and put a breather on it.

Do both, you never know when you might get in a bit too deep. Make sure you don't kink the breather hoses either, that will make your diffs suck in water if they are hot.

if you want the part that screws into the housing, you can just use a 1/8" NPT fitting with a hose barb on it. $3-5 from a hardware store. The same store you'd get the tubing from anyways. If you run clear tygon style tubing you can SEE if muck gets inside the tube.

Not to mention tygon is fuel and oil resistant unlike regular clear vinyl hose.

Go to a Nissan dealership and ask for part # 38323-C6010. Its a nipple that threads into the axle and you clamp some fuel line onto it. The same part works for front and back.

Yes you do need to a front breather, not sure what the guy saying you didn't was thinking. Its pretty obvious where it is if you take off the skid plate and look at the front of thediff.

did it today, on both front and rear, with part number 90404-51026. This is the part number from Toyota, and it is called a Union. It cost 5.75. I used rubber , black, fuel line hose, 1/4 " dia, from a auto parts store; i thought it would be the toughest and least likely to kink. The back was easy to get to, but I couldn't figure out where I wanted to run it to. So I wanted to try to run it to the gas tank neck, but I will need to drill out a hole for it, which has got me a little freaked out.

I think maybe I'll run both up front , under the hood, before the air intake, right by the front fender, plus i will use color coordinated tie wraps, so i don't forget which tube goes where...

I ran my rear into the rear driver side cargo box and then up my 1st gen rollbar, and the front I ran up behind the wiper motor.

Really!!! How did you get it into your cargo box, did you have to drill a hole, did you remove the cargo box first? give me the details, as I would rather do it myself, than be charged by my Mechanic.
mine is an 88' so it should be a similar setup to yours.
