Hi all! My first post: I seem to be going backwards as everyone seems to want to convert 2wd 4Runners into 4wd. Where as I have a 1992 4wd and want to convert it to 2wd. What do I need to get to make this happen. I assume I'll need front spindles, a drive shaft and possibly a transmission. Anything else? Or, does anybody want to trade? I'll post a pic on my website. Just dont put it in 4WD, VOILA. 2WD. What year 4runner? I have an '04 Tacoma PreRunner.

PM user neilconcept.... he is doing opposite of what you are trying to accomplish. He had a nicely lifted 4runner and i am sure he has some parts left over. Worth a shot...

You could just yank the front driveshaft, diff and half shafts. Plug up the holes in the back of the spindles and you are set. If you wanted to lose the t-case, you would probably need at least a tail housing from a 2WD tranny, or the whole unit and at that point a longer rear shaft would be needed.

ya whats the reasoning behind this? I would sell like you mentioned and just buy a 2wd. i bet you would make some money if you did that.

I haven't been in a 4x4 situation in years and I just like the way the prerunners look. Trading/selling was really just an idea, but I'd rather keep the 4x4 because it has beefier front suspension with cool aftermarket parts available.

Dont put it into 4wd, or you could get manual hubs and never lockt he fronts and then have a 4wd rear.

sorry for being thick, but how does a prerunner look ANY different than a 4x4? you mean it being jacked up 6 inches in front with long travel and none in the rear, looking like a dog dragging its ass on the carpet?

after reading that it came across as kind of mean, and i didnt intend it to be that way, just asking.

2wd and 4wd 2nd Gen 4runners are the exact same heigth. In fact, they use the exact same front suspenion componenets, minus the diff and axles. There is absolutely no pont in converting to 2WD, unless you are saving weight for a stadium truck.

There is haynes for you. They may be talking about the 2wd truck, which is much lower and uses completely different suspension. All 2nd Gen 4runners are the same height.

Just don't use your 4WD and get a long travel suspension kit (total chaos, or something). You could leave your 4Runner alone, get a 2WD pickup, and make a real pre-runner much easier.

I have the Total Chaos Gen 2 kit, i like the option i have of using the 4wd on my T100, while still able to unlock the hubs for 2wd, the 2wd mini Toys can pull nearly as much travel with bolt on suspension vs. the 4wd chassis, not as strong, horribly weak upper control arm half shafts.

You can go 3 inches wider and run the T-100 CV's, you will still have 4WD and 14 inches of wheel travel. What more can you ask for?
