OK when I drive my rig, (1995 4Runner 3.0 Auto 4x4) there seems to be a carbon smell at times. I smell it more when the back window is open. I also noticed the other day when starting it, a small amount of blak smoke but only for a few sec's. Is this something to be worried about, and is ther anything I can do to help this matter out.

I also want to point out that the rig runs great other then a little but of a ruff idle at times.

Also keep in mind that I had the compleat top end done about 8K miles back.

What was done:

New Valves
Timing Belt
Water Pump
H.G.'s
New Plugs (Do-not no of what type)
New Wires (Do-not no of what type)
All new Air Lines
All new Hoses
New Gass Filter

I also do-not no if the PVC Valve was changed

Any help........................

I'm not even sure what carbon smells like.
Diamonds don't smell and they're pure carbon.

me either, I would not know a carbon if i smelled it.. Are you sure you don't mean exaust fumes?

I think I know what you are saying and must say I too have smelled this under the same conditions you mention. I associate the smell more like paint thinner fumes, but not quite the same smell. It mainly depends on the breeze outside and if I'm backing up with window down and some gets through the window, so I would say nothing to worry about.

The black smoke is a rich condition from the cold start injector maybe feeding more fuel then you really need at the time of start up, so unless it gets worse, then I wouldn't worry about that either.

that is exhaust fumes you are smelling, they are being drawn inside the vehicle while the rear window is down. not a good situation as you are breathing carbon monoxide.

two ways to remedy the problem: 1) keep the rear window closed while driving, 2) open the front windows and run the fan on at least speed 3, fresh setting with the rear window open. option 2 is of course seasonal related.

iirc, this is mentioned in the owners manual somewhere.

Yup, it's very dangerous to drive with the rear window down, especially if you don't have really, really good airflow through out the vehicle.
BTW, it's not even the exhaust parts that you can smell that are the dangerous parts of it.

Normally I noticed with my 4runner, if I had the window down I got really bad exhaust odors in the truck. Did some checking and had a pretty bad exhaust leak which was letting the air roll straight back and get sucked into the window. Since I fixed the exhaust I'm not getting the odors in the truck anymore.

 

My runner was fine until my dumba$s removed the cat, made it horrible...
