Unhappy Can't find my tranny type anywhere

Hi Everyone,

I have an opportunity to buy a good condition W56 5 speed tranny for my truck. It's a 1990 22R with a manual 4 speed in it currently. I'm more of less wondering if I can figure out the type of tranny I have if it will be a direct bolt up or if there will be a zillion modifications to make it work.

The sites below stop at around 87-88 22R and then the tranny's pick up around 89-92 with the 22RE engine. I'm honesty not sure what tranny I have. It doesn't say anything on the stickers under the hood, and in the door jam.

I've googled it forever, found stuff on Wiki, but nothing that says, "Oh you have a 90 22R? Here's your tranny type."

Thanks for your help

I've looked in the door jam and it says just about everything except for the type of transmission.

How would a W56 transmission for a 22R-E not directly bolt to a 22R, when they share the exact same engine block(which is the part it bolts to)?

The transmission type is there somewhere. If you know where to look.

My hero. that's just what I needed. I have a G40. Is the swap a difficult one or is it more than just take out a tranny, put in a tranny?

The W56 bellhousing should bolt directly to the 22R. Other than that, I know nothing regarding how difficult a swap it would be. Sorry.

Here's a thread you should read:

I'm assuming since your truck is a 4 speed it is a 2wd? If thats the case then no the W56 will not work with your truck.
