Can I drive without my front diff in place?

Did a quick search and found one thread that said I can... just want to make sure. I'm planning on doing some maintenance on my front diff and CV joints, but I'm thinking it can easily happen that I don't get all the work done over one weekend with 2 kids in the house. Can I then just drive around without the front diff and CV shafts in place, or will everything just fall apart then? I guess I can figure this out by looking at how everything is connected, but I figured somebody here might have some experience with this.

ADD hubs?

if so, then you COULD remove the front driveshaft & diff, then cut the outer boots and pull everything but just the outer CV joints from the spindle-inward.

you must leave the cv axle splined shaft in the bearings and the nut torqued down. that should work...

I have ADD, but also manual hubs. Just from looking at this page: http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...15componen.pdf I don't see why I need to leave the splined shaft in there. It's not holding anything else in place, is it?

saw the sig when i came back for your response... lol...

hmmm... i don't know about the manual hubs. on the 3rd gens, if you remove the outer joint and then drive like that, you pretty much have a 99.9% chance of trashing your wheel bearings.

however, i think the manual hubs have a different setup if i recall...

hopefully someone with manual hubs will chime in for ya.

good luck!

Absolutely. Been there done that.

Just pull the hubs off, take out the diff and CVs.

If you have center caps, don't worry about it, otherwise install the hubs to help keep moisture out and stuff some plastic in the holes left in the spindle by the missing axle.

You'll want to clean and repack the wheel bearings when you put stuff back together.

Now, having said that, it's pretty obvious you don't want to do any deep water crossings, right?

Cool, thanks. No water crossings for me, just going to and from work, and it's not raining much here in the Bay Area yet. It's all going back in place before I do any trips to the mountain for sure.

Manual hubs is a Full floating setup, so you can drive without the CV's in place. Heck, you could drive without the outer locking hubs in place, but then stuff gets dirty.
