I replaced my headgasket about 6 months ago. It was running great but all of a sudden the exhaust started sounding odd and then it died. I discovered a broken timing chain guide and the the cam sprocket bolt and gear was loose. Tearing down further the locating pin on the cam is sheared off.

I need to replace my cam. Do I need new head bolts (mine were replaced with the HG)? Anything else I'm not thinking of? Thanks!

 

That is a major failure which means a full tear down and inspection..

Some questions you should be asking and answering..

What seized? Why did it seize? What parts impacted after it spun loose? Where did any debris wind up? Is anything else lurking ready to fall apart?

Pretty sure there is a length spec for the head bolts in the service manual.

 

What vehicle? 1986 4runner with 22re? Should I guess?

Toyota says you don't have to replace the head bolts, even when you replaced the head gasket. If it helps you sleep at night, new bolts won't hurt, but Toyota says you don't need 'em.

If your problem is that the "knock pin" (cam locating pin) 90250-06001 sheared off, that's a $1.23 part. https://parts.lakelandtoyota.com/sho...rimLevel=18419 Is the cam damaged as well?

Even if you need to replace the cam, I believe you do need to remove the head bolts, so in that case you WILL need to replace the head gasket.

 

So the cam locating pin can be replaced? Awesome! I'm dropping the pan anyway as I'm replacing the timing chain just to be safe. The cam is not damaged otherwise. There was a little wear on the timing cover but that's all the damage that I've found. And yes 1986 4runner 22re.

 

You'll need to examine that mating slot in the Cam sprocket. On the 3VZE, the slots in the cam sprockets aren't all that tough. So when I bent (not sheared) the knock pins, there was some distortion in the sprockets. But the 3VZE uses two identical sprockets, with them facing in opposite directions. I just swapped the two sprockets, turn each around to fit, and got an undamaged part of the sprocket!

On the 22re you won't be quite as lucky, so eyeball the sprocket.
