First a little history the truck is a 86 toyota 22RE. I replaced the a/c pump 6 months ago along with the reciever drier, the old pump was bad plus it was low on freon. Had a shop recover and store the remaining freon and then put it back after I installed everything. It was still low so I put a can in and it was right in spec and really cold 40 degrees. Now 6 months later it only gets to 80 when its 110 outside. I checked the pressure and when I hook up the gauges both are at 150psi then I turn the compresser on and the low side is 40psi and the high side is 250psi.Its not low on freon so I dont know what the problem is? Also when the shop put the freon in the truck they didnt pull vacuum like they should of, but it was a family friend so you all know how that goes. I'm a a/c tech so I know a little about this but with my lack of a recovery machine leaves me stuck. My theory is there is air or moisture in the system. I plan to recover , vacuum and recharge with freeze 12 but I would like to get a second opinion? Thanks

 

Uh, the first problem is you re-used refrigerant that is usually a no-no. Yeah refrigerant doesent wear out, but it can be contaminated. personally I'd start over w/ some new refrigerant and make damn sure you pull a good vacuum on it, I'd try this first and see whacha ya got.

 

I know the refrigerant wasnt contaminated (original 1986)and it went through a recycler, but with the guy not pulling a vacuum its probaly contaminated now. R-12 stoped being produced around 1995 so all refrigerant now is mostly used and recycled.

 

so are you saying there was no vacuum put on the system after you installed the goodies? if so, you need to just start over.

 

What did you do with that antique expansion valve?

 

Expansion valve was never replaced

 

And the fan clutch?

 

While you're replacing the EV clean the evaporator inside and out.(spotless)40 degrees wont do.Does yours have a evap temp sensor?

 

The fan clutch seems to work its 110* here and the truck has never got hot. I dont think the truck has a evap temp sensor.
