update on the engine. after driving for a week, most of the noise has gone back to normal. there's still the exhaust leak and maybe some sort of mechanical sound, both of which i'll be checking out this weekend. also, i filled up today. ~21 mpg. sweet, back up to where i was before

Nice man! Good to hear that she's all better aside from a lil exhaust leak. The other sound may be the valves needing tweaked a bit.

Just a tip... if you put a lil seafoam in there, just enough to get it to smoke, not for a treatment.... it will reveal where your exhaust leak is after it sits in there a minute and then you start it up. It revealed EVERY leak for me, lol. I had around 8 on my stock down pipe and 3 on the manifold itself. And mine has NOOOOOOO rust. However, I'll have to listen again, .....yours is a 'swooshing' leak,.... but it's got a lil 'tap' to it, so it might just be the exhaust manifold not seating somewhere, ya know? You'll find it, Ian, .... and GREAT to hear on the mileage, ....SHEEESH! lol. That's combined, 21?

^^^ or you cold hook up the fuel return line to a vacuum port and then start the engine,,,, you will quickly see ALL the leaks on your exhaust, highlighted by fuel.....don't ask how i know this, but it has to do with my ghetto rigged 3vz.

Lol I've done that with a few drops of coolant in the intake/carb etc etc. works pretty well.

Awesome rebuild. I wish mine was going as good. I went to bed late last night working on it and after a couple hours sleep had to come in to work. Ugh. I was having problems getting the distributor at TDC. Saw some of your photos and some photos in another build that was posted here and I'll have to adjust it when I get home. I have a slight fuel leak from the big fuel line (19mm bolt) on the bottom of the intake. I'm pretty sure I just need to replace the washers. It runs (surprisingly) but it is really rough and was only idling at 500ish when it was first fired. Hoping getting the dist on there correct will fix this. If not, um.. yeah...

I started this job yesterday. The truck is a '90 2WD manual trans. I was easily able to break the front crankshaft pulley bolt loose with a common 1/2" drive breaker bar and a 3/4" hex impact socket. I had the trans in 5th gear with the parking brake set tight; the crank didn't turn more than about 10 degrees before the bolt came loose. This was an original, undamaged bolt and the engine has 120,000 easy miles on it (previously owned by an old guy who doesn't flog his vehicles). A 19mm socket is not required- the 3/4" socket fits very well.

I'm glad I found your post, I recently bought a 93 Toyota Pickup and am using it for the Mongol Rally in July. Lots of useful info here, thanks chief.

In the photo of the valve cover, there are four sensors visable, a blue plug and a brown plug, then more towards the front of the engine is a brown and a gray plug. What are the brown and gray plugs for? and will the engine run if those are missing? In my truck those two plugs are not plugged in and the truck does not run. The sensors are missing. Hate to sound stupid but the engine was received in peices and it appears some stuff was missing.

all of those are vacuum valves for various emissions systems. every truck is different, so your's probably needs those to run correctly. look though a haynes manual to see if you can trace the vacuum lines and valves

What year 22RE is it?

Here is a diagram for an 87 22RE w\AC (Mine)....

Name: 001-25.jpg
Views: 168
Size: 98.4 KB

It lists both VSV's on my year.. But my 87 does NOT Have an EGR VSV nor others that later model rigs have. VERY important to know what year, because you might not be missing anything, depending on the year(If I missed you posting the year..... forgive me, I'll shut up now! hahaha)

Sorry Ian... just going through this right now, so thought I'd throw it up there..... Don't throw that wrench at me, k? hahaha

Between your thread, 92 toy's, 4crawlers writeup, and the help(from yotatech) that will come if i run into a problem, this timing chaing/head gasket job isn't seeming so bad. Thanks for the writeup! I learned to get some head bolts early on!

Also was your head gasket from engnbldr?(Can't quite member)
