I thought the pins would require some heating of the piston to get in?
Or is that just to remove the old ones...

EDIT: Well, unless your pistons came with wrist pin retaining clips....then the pin should move freely in both the piston and rod.

thanks!

and now that I think about it, the rods do slide side to side on the old wrist pins.. I may not need the shop to do those afterall

[quote=iamsuperbleeder;51135998]lmao, well she loves here Garmin GPS
I don't recommend standalone units when I go driving, why not just use your cellphone instead! I have telenav with AT&t and I can't live without it, literally. I have had a Garmin nuvi 750 and TomTom GO 720, and Telenav literally has at least twice the POI. I remember those expensive map updates too, telenav has FREE map, poi, voice, etc updates. I first saw TeleNav mentioned in the New York Times and then I went to their website:telenav.com $10/month is a great deal, especially considering it offers more features than a $600 standalone unit.

I think I speak for everyone here when I say I want to see a video like that, with the same tempo of music, when the rig is done. Only this time we want wheeling shots and not some "Top Gear Killing a Yota" shots of the motor.
Speaking of that where is that video...........

ummmmm, no offence, but kinda random
lol
I use my HTC Mogul with Sprint and Garmin on it; love Garmin, but I hate the fact that it basically renders my phone useless while I'm using the GPS (of coarse I can thank Windows Mobile for that
but that subject is a completely different thread).

I got her the Nuvi 855; it's really nice, and I'm HIGHLY considering buying myself one to hard-wire into the Toy
oh hell yeah! wheeling hopefully, but I'm definately going to ROAST my old tires on the old rims (cause they're bald already
), and I'll get some kick'n vids and pics from that little event
So it turns out that the old pistons and rods were quite easy to separate

AND, with a little coaxing (with the help of the perfectly sized socket and a hammer) the wrist pin bushings come out too

Kinda ruins the extention used with it though

but that's ok; I'll just set it beside the one I ruined using as a "brass drift" to pop the cone washers out of my hubs, lmao
But after looking at these things after a little disassymbely, I notised 2 things...
First there one rod with a different marking than the other 3
Three of them have the number "041U" formed on it:

and just ONE of them has the number "041M" on it

Any idea what that's about?
But that's not the strangest thing I noticed... the strangest thing was the pistons...
It looks like there's 2 of one type, and 2 of another! I'm not sure what to think of this... I'll let the pictures explain:

Maybe it's nothing, maybe it's more
I have no idea, but it went 296k like that, so I guess no harm, lol

Wow great pics!! Hmmm shiny stuffs!! Weird about the pistons, I have now idea if mine had dissimilarities...I guess I didn't OBSESS over it!! LOL!!!
Who the heck mentioned that Top Gear video?!?!?!?!

lol
it's just something that cought my eye
they both have Toyota in the cast, and one type has Aisin in the cast too, so they're definately original, it's just strange...
oh well, at least all the new ones match, even if they don't have "TOYOTA" casted into them

I'll try my hand with a propane torch tomorrow to see if I can heat the end of the rod up enough so that the new pin bushings will slide into place easily, but if not I'll just take the bushings to the machine shop and have them put them in. But I don't think they'll be too much of a problem; just can't hammer them in like I hamered the old ones out
and gotta make sure I get the oiling hole lined up. Shouldn't be too hard

Be extremely careful heating the rods. Many Fords have pressed-pin rods and some have been ruined because a shop overheated the small end upon assembly. It might also be a good idea to freeze the bushings. The bushings are likely pressed with a stepped mandrel that keeps the shoulder from collapsing....like installing cam bearings in a pushrod V8.

I need to remove the bushings from the plastic packaging and mic them; if the OD of the bushing is fairly close to the ID of the opening in the rod, I'll see if I can't work it in there carefully, otherwise I'll just let the machine shop worry about those too
#256
well, mission acomplished, mostly
I got the new pin bushings into the rods, but without the heating technique. I tried the heating with a torch first, but that got me no where
those little thin bushings heat up pretty much instantly once they come in contact with the heated rod, so it doesn't make that much of a difference, unless you could do it really fast, lol
Instead, I tried a different approach:

Actually worked great! Untill when almost at the end of the first one, my clamp decided that it wasn't going to take it

So, I stopped that before I fubared the bushing, and rode up to the parts store where I use to work, and where I'm still good friends with all the guys that work there, and used their press real fast, and knocked em all in under 5 minutes, lol

and yes I got all of the oiling holes lined up perfectly too

So I have the block strapped to a pallet in the back of the temp-truck with a tarp over it, and the crank, the new pistons, freeze plugs with wrist pins, rods, and main caps all in the floorboard, and providing I actually get off work on time tomorrow, I'll drop everything off at the machine shop

Progress is looking good man!!!!
#258
well, the only reason it's strapped down is because I have a 30 minute drive to and from work, and that would suck to have it flop off the pallet and slide around in the back of the truck, lol
and the tarp, well, it's been raining EVERY afternoon, and I'm going to try and keep as much moisture off of it that I can, to prevent any surface rusting
I can't wait to get a nice clean new-looking block back from the shop, ready to bolt new parts to

#259
I hear ya, I was the same way. 30 minute ride to work + rain + idiots on the road=tarp and strap!! lol!
Man, it was sure purty when I picked it up! I couldn't believe it was the same motor!!

Sorry, thought I would tease ya a little!!!
