if you have a build thread, link it here and we'll all be happy to chime in. most everything I've done, I've felt like I was definitely unprepared and in way over my head. but 1 step at a time and with time at my leisure as I had back-up transportation available....I was able to get this. of course, I had plenty of help right here and spent way more time reading and researching than actual wrenching.

Thanks for posting this thread on mine. Very helpful. Especially stumbling on 4Crawler's idea to lift the motor for the oil pan. After tons of searching nothing I found was this useful.

Thanks a bunch.

Thanks for this write up! This along with the FSM and I think I'll have no issues.

Lastnight I went to check my oil and other things ...... cause I was bubbling back into the coolant overflow tank and overheating (feared the worst and it was true) BLOWN HEAD GASKET! Yellow Sludge Of Death! Its either that or my guides for the T chain are gone and the chain rubbed into the wpump housing like yours. It overheated so Im still going to do the head gasket regardless.

So I'll be tackling this job very shortly.

Couple quick questions ...

1. Did u replace ur oil pump and water pump? Im assuming you did cause they look spiffy on the new TC and was it necessary or did you do it cause it was just a great time to do so? I mean its understandable they really arent that expensive. Need a little advise on that one.

2. Also did u replace your timing chain and sprockets along with the guides?

I'm getting a parts list together as we speak so I can order everything and get started.

On my list of parts to order so far.

1. Timing cover (figured its a good time to do so)

2. Full engine gasket set (DNJ FGS9000)

3. Head Bolts (Afraid to reuse and snap one off in the block EEEEK)

4. Full Timing set (chain, both sprockets, tensioner, drivers side heavy duty guide, and the left to match) But I might just get the guides and chain if the sprockets look decent. However I dont want to have to be taking it back apart any time soon so that's up in the air right now.

I'll be replacing my belts as well.

Thats it so far. I was just wondering if there was anything else you had to get PARTS wise, besides the crank bolt and allen bolt.

Thanks for your time.

D-

P.S. sorry for the novel I just typed out lol

no that's fine.

I believe i may have a parts list somewhere in this thread but not sure.

timing chain (i believe he calls it the FRONT END kit @ engnbldr.com) came with metal guides and new tesnioner and sprockets.

yes on the crankshaft bolt (TOYOTA), yes on the allen bolt (LC Engineering)

the oil and water pump were included with the kit.

good luck.....ask lots of questions....take lots of pics, label lots of bags.

drain that oil now though....

well....update. nothing exciting.

still have and likely will always have, an oil leak from the back of the oil pan due to a bad application of FIPG combined with smearing it when putting the pan on.

so, anyways, some oil leakage is noted and expected by me. I am under the hood about every week to check the oil level. leaks 3 drops....consistently 3 drops....while parked. not entirely certain whether or not it does it while running, but who cares.

today Joe popped the hood to check the oil and I said that it was starting to look wet where the valve cover meets the head and can see some oil on the back of the transmission. I had said we probably would need to change the gasket at some point soon......and he said maybe we just need a re-torque. Joe was right......3 of 4 acorn nuts were able to be tightened by hand. torqued them to 52in/lb and that's it.

not very exciting. but i guess after almost 2 years and several hundred heating and cooling cycles, those little rubber grommets physically change.

bottom line.....check the acorn nuts.

thanks man.

sometimes I stand in the garage and can't believe we actually gutted and rebuilt these 2 trucks (mine and my son's). just a matter of patience, perseverance, research, time and money........and a willingness to walk away and give it a rest every now and then.

I had trouble with knowing when to walk away and give it a rest. but after a 1/2" socket wrench to a fender and $150 later, I figured it out!
And i'm jealous of your trucks lack of rust. Mine is so bad, the front diff cover bushing bolt was rusted into the bushing and I had to cut it out and drill out what was left of the bolt! walked away a few times there!

I'm in the middle of doing a similar job right now,but with a 22rte turbo motor. Blew the head gasket, although I think it was seeping when I bought the truck. Putting a non-turbo engnbldr street/rv head, engnbldr 270 cam, engnbldr 4-piece front end kit,arp studs,ct26 supra turbo on.Got it torn down right now, cleaning parts and getting ready to put it all back together. My first go-round at this kind of thing too.
