Basket and Brush Guard Added!

I was very busy this weekend. Along with getting the house ready for winter, i did a lot of work to the 4Runner!

I added a brush guard and painted it with spray-on bedliner. It's a genuine Toyota brush guard that i picked up for $25. I had to grind the rust off, prime it and paint it with the bed liner.

Before

After

I also bought a safari basket, i paid $75, and just like the brush guard, i ground down all the rust, primed it and painted it with bedliner. I also attached it to the removable top. BUT i made it removable and with the addition of a plate it could be attached to the top of the truck EVEN WHEN THE TOP IS OFF!

Pics (they aren't very good if you want a diagram i can draw one lol)

Edit just changed it again

Better shot of the basket
If you guys have any questions feel free to ask!

That brush guard is for the 2nd gen 4Runners and 3rd gen trucks but they will fit your body style as well. I have the same one on my 94 4Runner.

I'd like to know more about how you attached the basket. It looks like you bolted the two metal rails to the fiberglass top, and and then bolted the basket to the rails, correct? If so, did you take any measures to make sure the holes you drilled won't leak? I know I would be very nervous drilling any kind of holes in my roof!

That's what i did. I used 1/4 inch diameter bolts and used a 3/16 inch drill bit. The screws threaded themselves in the fiberglass. The bolts are held on to the top like this,

exposed threads
nut
rack
nut
washer
rubber washer/gasket
fiberglass top
washer
bolt head

If that isn't clear i can draw something to show you what i mean lol

and all around the bolts is silicone sealant that is waterproof and UV resistant. I tested it today with a hose no water leaks in.

Looks good, the headlight covers contour more than mine though, they look good on yours.

Thanks for the diagram! I've wanted a basket for a while, been thinking of using one off a crew cab Frontier, but if I can mount one your way, it'd probably be cheaper.

Just search Craigslist one will turn up eventually. I got mine off an old heep. When i first mounted it, i didn't use any silicone sealant. I tested it with a hose and it was still water proof. Then i put the sealant on for extra protection. It's not gonna leak, in case you were worried. The rubber washers are a must to ensure a leak-free seal.
