Its how we learn.
Looks like I have something to do Saturday. However its not too much of a pain. Most of the oil pan nuts are easy to get to. If I continue to see it I'll do the timing bolts 1 by 1.
Now, where the hell did I put my FIPG?

Hey nice bumper!
I was reading about your knock sensor issue (like how much the dealer wants to charge for it and the labor)....why don't you take that money and put a 22RE in that thing instead
I think the knock sensor just screws into the side of the block - really easy.

**** UPDATE ****
Hi
Happy New Year!
Early December the Sierras were blessed with about 3ft of fresh white powder and me having a 4x4 I took that opportunity to get my snow boarding legs working again, plus put Jennifer to the test. This is my first ever 4x4 vehicle.
It's a decent drive where I'm at so it was a nice long ride until I started climing the hills outside of Sacramento. I was in 4th gear at 65mph, climing and losing speed. I'm just not used to this. The good thing is that this is only for a few miles however this POWER SUCKS.
Anyway, I get to the snow and I am having a blast. I'm like a kid in the candy store in the 4X4
BUT, It wasn't until a day later I learned that I completely forgot that in order to enjoy the FULL 4x4, you have to lock the wheel hubs

. I did get stuck at one point but manage to pull out by reversing. Oh well, more reason to go back when another fresh blanket of white powder coats the mountains and this time, LOCK the hubs!
**O.k so the timing cover is starting to show coolant (passanger side). I tried using my sealent from my Neon since I lost my FIPG on the outside and that is a no go. I still have coolant slowly coming out. Nightmares developed because everything was so easy putting on when the engine was out and now I might have to redo it, this time with the motor in!? This is going to be such a pain in the ass.
**The gaskets on there are from Ted's rebuild kit which are Rock Auto and I hear mixed reviews from Rock. IF I do end up redoing the cover, should I use a different gasket or FPIG or what do you recommend so I never see this issue again? Would buying new bolts help too? Crap, what about the oil pan gasket that's on the timing cover?
**The next thing is that the rear differential is showing signs of leaking. I've found Philberts write up and will take that into consideration. I'll have to read that again and think about gaskets. Plus there are some updates to the process I see. Maybe I can do that at my buddies shop. UGGH!
**Oh, and sometimes when I shift, I hear a "PING" noise. It's pretty noticible.
Again, thank you guys for all your help!

Hi Jack,
I just heard that a couple'a guys got a hold of the truck that was used in the BTTF filming and are giving it a resto. It was in pretty good shape but was painted orange and lifted too high--can't believe someone would do that. Here's their Facebook page *edit...looks like you knew about that and posted on it already, sorry*:

Sorry you're chasing gremlins. Is the click between shifts something you can feel through the clutch pedal? Mine has kind of a metallic click from the clutch pedal when pushing it down. I haven't completely figured it out but if I adjust the threaded adjustment stud that connects it to the master cylinder a little, it goes away for a while and the comes back in the next days/weeks. I don't think it's anything serious--it's been that way for years. Still a bit of a mystery though. I have some rear diff leakage as well...not enough to get on the ground or lower the fluid level--I just leave it alone.
On the power, it kind of helps to go back in time (on-topic for this thread, right?) when driving these. You can't compare them to modern vehicles. They are from a time when highway speed limits were 55 mph and 0-60 in 12s was quick. Adopt a slower mindset and enjoy the scenery. Or drive a VW type II and then get back in the Toyota--it'll feel like a rocket! I often end up in 2nd gear on some of the passes around here.

Thank you young and maco35 for your info and compliment. I completely understand that these trucks came from a time when .... but but but .... yeah
I have developed an adaptation to my daily driver of 10 years (neon srt-4) with comes with a 2.4L turbo charged powerplant.
As for the pinging, I guess bit sounds metallic. Think of getting an aluminum baseball bat and hitting a pole. That PING is what it sounds when I shift. Not all the time but noticeable.
Hopefully this week I'll get the rear dif fixed.
Go 9ers!!!!!

Alright I was able to catch my buddy on a good day and got the rear diff done. I never want to see this leak again!
The front would be a different story. I'll have to have a pro look at that.
NOW THIS TIMING COVER. As I mentioned I got this rebuild kit (cover too) from Ted at engnbldr and he uses Rock Auto parts/gaskets. I've heard mixed things but I ask you this.
What would you use? New Gaskets? FIPG? New cover?
After about 2,xxx miles now I am seeing coolant creep out of the timing cover (passanger side) which is driving me nuts. The bolts are tightened to spec according to this chart

This will be a pain in the ass job, no doubt.
In the mean time here are some pics of last night

your truck has a nice ass
I used Ted's full kit including the timing cover. I used his gaskets plus black fipg and seems ok so far. Check the water pipes that screw into the rear of the timing cover, on both passenger and drivers side - I didn't have mine sealed up well/bolts tightened enough the first time I did it and it leaked.

She does have a sweet ass.
I was thinking if I should of just used fipg, or both for extra comfort. Everything on the driver side is dry.
At one point I did find some of the bolts loose when I discovered my oil pan bolts were loose. So I applied some sealant on the loose ones, and then again to the rest that holding the timing cover to to the block (passenger side) including the 2 to the pipe. I've figured by now i've stressed the gaskets.
Oil pump, water pump, SOLID. Not one drip. That's my only problem area.
I have time before Toyota Fest but I was hoping something like this wouldn't happen til years from now.

Those bumpers are really hard to find anymore, smittybilt don't make them for our trucks anymore, but you may get lucky if you check on your local craigslist and the classifieds on yotatech, good luck.

There is a pic of your truck from Marlins visit to Toyotafest. Look on their facebook.
I sawd it.
As far as Im concerned. Yours is the Back to the Future truck on yotatech. My nerves cant handle another build, even if it was the "real" one. Yours is the truck as far as Im concerned. IM sure most on yotatech feel that way.

Awww man, thanks a lot! It was such a great time sharing with everyone my build. Everyone got it! They understood! The older folks to the young. They looked, laughed and took pics.
Seeing the smiles on everyones faces and answering their questions was such a great feeling. I had a couple of folks tell me "I don't care what's here, you have the best car here". Man, that really got to me.
When I was pulling into my section the police officer directing traffic, smiled at me and gave me the thumbs up. After I passed him he looked again and screamed, YEAH! I think he read my plate "Statler toyota, Hill Valley CA, MCFLY87".
I wished there was more shows like these in my area so I can share the good times.
I know this is not the actual truck and I can tell you all the differences but the main point was, everyone got it. They new what it was. The ACTUAL truck is being restored this moment. I've seen that they just joined the forums (84--85 build section) and boy am I jealous. They're not too far from done too! I can't wait to see it.
In the end, I couln't of done it without my Master Tech Chris Yap and my other Buddy Jeffrey Ng for making this happen. Of course GAVAs Auto Body too. They did one ˟˟˟˟en amazing job!!

I'm only 20 minutes away from that place. I'll be entering my 2nd gen Camry next year though....so I know I wont be doing that boneheaded thing again!
