Back to the Future
Hey guys! First time Toyota and truck owner. I'm Jack from Daly City CA.
I just recently purchased a 1987 SR5 (22RE EFI) and I am planning to restore it to Marty McFlys truck in BTTF.
Right now it sits at 284K miles and I would like to rebuild the motor. I'm no mechanic and can only do basic things, so this project will be a learning experience. A buddy of mine will be helping me out. He's a gear head.
Question is, where do I go to find parts? Who sells rebuild kits and what comes with them? What other parts should I change out as well?
Right now it has new cap n rotor, plugs, wires, starter, radiator and alternator.
Once I pull the motor out I'll need to find a shop for paint and body work. Once that’s done, it's on to suspension, wheels, interior, roll bar, bumpers.
I hope you guys can point me into the right direction for parts because this is going to cost me a pretty penny

+1. I don't have personal experience with using parts from engnbldr but I have heard great things and their master rebuild kits are very affordable compared to going to a parts store.

If you want to be acccurate to the BTTF truck you'll need to SAS so it's like the 85.
+1 on ENGBLDR for the rebuild kit. If I ever need to rebuild, that's who I will go with.
The kit is here:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Toyota-22R-2...item5ae524fdb2
Just search "ENGNBLDR" on ebay and you can find all kinds of his parts. No sales tax since he's in OR.

The Toyota truck in the second movie's beginnign scene has NO vent windows, the KC light covers are missing, and the front end is IFS.
Yes... I am a nerd.
I think that when they wrote the third movie's script for Marty to actually DRIVE the truck, they realized they had to track down the original. They probably sold off the 1st 1985 truck thinking they wouldn't require it for filming. But ultimately, with the original Jennifer character leaving, they had to re-shoot the entire scene of Doc pulling up and refilling the "Mr. Fusion" generator.

[QUOTE=XtraSlow_XtraCab;51873539]Actually there is some debate to be said about that. In BTTF 1 & 3 you would be correct. Look closely at the garage scene at the BEGINNING of 2. Not the end of 1, but the beginning of 2. These takes are different because of Jennifer's replacement (Elizabeth Shoe) in the second movie.

Well this might be my personal opinion, but I liked the truck from when I saw the first movie. I also liked the first Jennifer (Claudia Wells) much better than the "replacement" (Elizabeth Shue). They obviously used different trucks between the movies, BTTF 2 wasn't in the theaters until 1989. There were other variants as well (single upright light bar vs double).
I only wish we could go back to those gas prices ($1.31 for Super?). $10 used to go a long way.

Loving all this feedback everyone!
I know this is not gonna be a 100% match because it's an 87 and of other things. I want that BTTF look.
I remember that different models were used between 1 & 2 and 3(?) but i'm not going for exact detail here.
So the "Master" kit is what i'm looking for from egnblder. $300(ebay) sounds like a deal to me. Now i just need a spot and tools to take this motor out.
Tomorrow morning i'm gonna to visit some autobody shops for quotes.

Welcome to YT, and congrats on your new toy. You will definitely find this site to be one of your greatest resources during project. (at least it helps me a lot) ... I found that rockauto.com has some great prices on parts if you ever need to order up some odds and ends. Keep us updated on your build!

Dude , she's a good looking rig. I had the opportunity to buy and 86 turbo edition very similar to that one for $1,000 but It just wasn't in the cards, (Time and money) it needed the engine rebuilt but was in good shape. Kinda wish I would have. I think the guy still has it so down the road I may see if I can snag it from him.

BTW BK2TFUTURE awesome looking truck! I've always wondered why some of the upper-door frames received a black paint separate from the primary color? There doesn't seem to be a noticeable pattern

I've been searching the web for the tube bumpers. Are these smittybuilt? Where can I find these badboys? I think the bumpers and interior (arm rest/center console) might be the hardest find.
BTW, what the hell is that plastic piece that covers over the back of the steering wheel called? Someone ripped it off attempted to steal the truck but failed.
Other then that, shoping for quotes for paint and body work today. Hope this doesn't cost me too much.
