I recently bought a 95 4runner 4WD with 135,000 miles and absolutely love it...except for the fact that it is an automatic. I dont know too much about working on trucks but I really want to start learning. I am wondering if anyone can let me know how hard and expensive it would be to swap my transmission for a five speed? Thanks

it woulld be easyier if you have a donor truck.. prolly gonna need the computer froma stick truck.. also have to mount the clutch pedal assembly..

i personally got my first auto yota and i love it!!!

I'm doing a swap as we speak. Although it is on an 86 4x4. Expensive? Well, I bought the truck for $500...here are MY costs...

1) Tranny $100
2) T-case $60
3) Flywheel $55
4) Pedals $20
5) x-member $15
6) Tranny seal $4
7) Tranny output $65
8) Clutch $90
9) Clutch master $38
10) Clutch slave $25
11) Shifter $5

Total $477

As you can see, I could have bought a $1k manual transmission truck.

Hope this helps. Its not "too" hard, but I think it isn't easy either. It will go a lot smoother if you have all the tools. You will NOT need a donor truck...just parts. Good luck!

91Toyota, could you post at least a few of your pics? It would be great to "see" what is involved in a tranny swap considering that I haven't done one before. This is a question that seems to come up alot so it's likely to also help others as well. Finally, what was the time span that it took for you to do the swap.

I think you will need a new rear driveshaft. The auto driveshaft is a bit shorter than the manual.

 

So is there a "how-to" on this swap? I have a 92 that's damn near perfect cept for the automatic trans. From reading up on this i'd need the following?

Donor trans
Transfer case
Ecm
Pedal assy
Clutch resovoir
Etc.

Am I missing anything?
