Another worn key/ignition cylinder...

92 auto 4runner-

Ok, I've done quite a bit of searching and made a couple of trips to a locksmith to no avail. The original key unlocks the doors but the ignition cylinder WILL NOT turn. I've tried lube, jiggling, moving the steering wheel, etc...nothing. I even have blisters on my index finger from trying to get the thing to turn. I went to a locksmith and they made a key that did absolutely nothing so I went back and they made a copy of the original and that one barely unlocked the doors and obviously didn't work in the ignition.

So, I'm pretty much resolved on replacing the cylinder but I need to get the truck out of my work parking lot and back home so I can work on it. Is there a way I can get it started and unlock the steering wheel until I can get a new cylinder next week? I don't have any power tools I can use in the parking lot either.

Thanks for any help.

Step 1: Take title to your local Toyota dealer.
Step 2: Ask them to make a key.
Step 3: Pay $8.00 or so
Step 4: Go drive your 4Runner

You need the title in your name to prove the vehicle is yours. You'll also need to provide the VIN, which of course will be on the title. I guess you might want to triple check it's the right VIN. If not though... you've got other troubles.

It worked for my '91 of which the only key I had was one with almost zero teeth left. Would have been useless to copy. Might want to call first. One dealer I spoke with said they didn't have records back that far, the second said no problem, they could make one.... and they did while I waited.

Hope this helps.

Actually, it's just the registration and driver's license and it's $13. I am not expecting that to work but it's worth a shot.

Thanks anyway.

I had the same problem. You're going to need to remove your cylinder anyway (If you can't get Toyoyta toget you a key). You'll have to drill out two tamper proof bolts to get the cylinder from the column. Then I used the FSM to look at the wiring scematic for the ignition cylinder plug, and used jumpers to turn on the ignition, and then the starter. You'll need at least a drill, the FSM, but it can be done...

Well, well, well. Whadya know, the dealership key worked and was only 12.96. I don't think I'll run back to that locksmith anytime soon for help. Between four employees they got me two non functional keys. The really funny thing is I was talking to the parts clerk (the day after my fun with the locksmith) at Toyota and he was like "Yeah, they called me asking for the key code..." But the locksmith didn't even try to cut the key with the code from the dealership! They said it was the wrong code! So what did they try first? Make a guess by just eyeballing the old, extremely worn, key! For $37!! lmao! At least they refunded me on that.

SO....yeah, go to the dealer first.
