Another Tranny Question

I have recently noticed that when I step on the gas getting on the freeway or where ever, that my transmission seems like it's slipping.
I have also noticed that it does this with the ECT button Off and sometimes with it on.
My question is has anyone else with an automatic transmission V6 and an A340E had this problem...?
And if so, what is the solution...? Solenoids, Torque Converter...?

Thanks in advance

No transmission pros

Come on guys no transmission pros out there with an answer. I know that more than one of you has rebuilt a tranny before.

If you do indeed have noticeable slippage then you already have enough internal damage to warrant removal and inspection. It is possible, though unlikely, that there is an external component at fault. But if your trans is slipping enough for you to feel it and it actually IS trans slippage, you already have internal damage. Whatever set of clutches is applicable to the gear that you experience the slippage in, is scorched or worse.

If it is a bad solenoid it would be the one for pressure control. When a shift solenoid fails usually the symptom is a complete loss of one or more gear ranges. Upon inspection of internal components, if almost all of the friction elements are somewhat scorched this is a tell tale sign of a defective EPC. The element that usually fails first in any unit due to normal operating conditions are the high, overdrive or 3/4 clutches depending on the unit. The high gear is almost always the weakest element.

If the manual lever position sensor is bad I believe it could possibly cause a falling out of gear symptom but should not be the cause of a slippage condition.

If the speed sensor is bad it could cause loss of shifting control in the computer as the computer needs that input to calculate the shift points.

Any of these conditions should cause a fault code to be stored but sometimes they don't. Give me specifics on your truck and I will check a transmission tech service forum I subscribe to for work.

There are many possibilities.

You've obviously checked your fluid level, and took note of the colour and smell...

I had a similar experience with my A340H. After a fluid change at a tranny service shop, full flush at the dealer, and then getting a $2K quote at a repair shop, I went under the truck. Wiggled a couple of wires, including the one to the speed sensor. Problem solved, rock solid ever since.

I would start by checking the functionality of the speed sensor on the trans.

I find one post about the transmission control unit wires being melted against the dipstick. The problems were odd, not like you describe but something to cross your fingers and look for.

Also, check every ground you can find. It never hurts to take them off one by one and sand the wire mount and the body and also to replace the bolt. Do every one you can find.

One more thing outside if it is an E would be the throttle postition sensor. When they fail they usually exhibit symptoms at 5% to 15% of throttle, usually not on accelleration.

This is a common problem with the autos. Your shift solenoid is going or gone. Pull the tranny codes, same way you pull the engine codes, just watch the O/D light instead. My bet is that you'll get a code 62 which is the shift solenoid. Easy to change just a little expensive. You have to get the same part # due to the fact that 93 on autos had a different shift pressure and the solenoids won't work properly. Look up shift solenoids and there is a bunch of threads.

Could just be the adjustment cable that comes off the throttle body. Mine was sloppy and it never used 3rd when entering a highway. Cheap fix if your lucky.

If it has a throttle cable it is a 340H and the cable controls the pressure in the trans. If it doesn't it is an E and the Electronic Pressure Control solenoid controls the pressure.

A340e

I just went and rechecked to make sure, the driverside door pillar says A340E and I also checked under the hood, it has the cable that goes to the transmission too.

huh I was thinking that the e didn't have the cable but I could be wrong. I have only had a couple and that was a few years ago. I haven't looked in the manual. I should bring it home tomorrow and keep it at home cause I never need it at work. Most vehicles that have electronic controlled trans do not have the throttle cable anymore.
