I just wheeled my crawler a few weeks ago and the AC was working great. Pretty impressive that a 15 year old rig blows colder AC than my Tundra does. Anyways I went out yesterday to a local place for a few hours and on the way home I rolled up the windows and fired up the AC. It never got cold. I pulled over and troubleshot some. When you push in the AC button the green light comes on but it doesn't idle up or anything. Basically the compressor is not engaging. I looked for fuses and didn't see anything. I'm not real familiar with this system. Anyone have this happen before or know where to start troubleshooting? I take a lot of pride in being able to say my SASed Runner on 37's blows cold AC! Mobbing that thing down the freeway with all the windows open is deafening.

 

Same thing happened to me. Turned out to be the clutch on the compressor. Your pulley spins all the time, and when you push the button, the clutch engages the compressor. Check to make sure you have power going into the clutch, when you push the button, and then replace it.

Fixed mine, and the AC is colder than ever.

I'd say its about 99% sure that, since you get no bog down of the motor when you push the button, and if you'd bled off the coolant, it would still slow the motor down/idle up.

 

X2 on the ac clutch mine went out on my 86 and got nothing .lol

 

Check the pressures on the high and low sides. If they are out of limits the pressure cut off switch on the evaporator will disengage the clutch too. The low pressure cut off keeps the compressor from running if there is no refrigerant with lubricant.

 

where do you guys get a new clutch for the compressor? i think mine is out too.

Anything is possible, just depends on how much effort and time you wanna put into it.

That sucks Joey! Now you know how I feel with half doors haha but it's well worth it! My AC blows way cold when I put the reg doors back on though

lol, my windows are down anyways, but A/C is nice to have on those especially hot days.

There are a few vendors here who give you good prices on Toy parts. Hit them up. I get a deal through a local dealer. Its only slightly more than CRAPA auto parts, and its OEM.

 

I got a new compressor and clutch for my 85 for what the dealer wanted for just the clutch. No OEM parts for ones that old anyway.

Hiroshu ever driven a rig with 37" mud tires down the freeway when it's 105 out with the windows down. You can't even talk to the person sitting next to you hardly. The women usually get pissed when you wreck their hairdo too.

 

i turned my AC into OBA.... but with these upper 90s this week i'm kinda regretting it...
