95 4Runner Code 52 after cutting off connector

I found a connector under the throttle body that was falling apart and one of the wires was exposed. We decided to just go ahead and cut off the connectors and joined the 2 wires individually with wire connectors then used electrical tape to wrap them together.. Well it turned out to be the wiring for the knock sensor and now I’m getting a code 52. Do you think I mixed up the “polarity” when joining the wires or did I completely mess things up by cutting off the connectors? Thanks in advance…..

Knock sensors are pretty much just microphones that listen for bad noises. Doing the splice could have introduced a lot of background noise or the ecu realized the sensor is bad
Id replace the knock sensor harness.
