i have recently purchases a 2nd gen 4runner and the idle is very high in my mind. sadly its an automatic.. (sorry yall but i had to get a yota again).. anyways.. it idles about 1200 and up to 1700 at alot of times. when in gear it goes down to about 1100. i believe it should be at about 7-1000 in nuetral or park. Any suggestions? please help as my mpg has gone from 13.5 in my first tank. down to 11.2 in my most recent..

i have added a bottle of seafoam, added a k&n air filter.. haven't had time to take it to any shop to get a basic new vehicle inspection/tune up. want to start on my own and i know that the idle has to be a big part of the bad mpg

is the throttle shutting closed as far as it should? or sticking open?

 

im not sure.. seems like its sticking i suppose.

 

i can take some pictures and post them up tomorrow of a couple things that i have been trying to tinker with and adjust.

 

Have you checked you timing?
Or adjusting your TPS?
It could be a few things...

 

Sounds like a busted intake hose between the throttle body and the VAF.

 

Maybe you just need to adjust idle, or idle air screw o ring is bad.
As for poor gas mileage could be also a bad o2 sensor.
It won't necessarily throw a code.
I'd would also check for any stored codes also.

 

like everyone mentioned, sounds like a vacuum leak or bad sensor. easiest thing to do for starters is to clean the throttle body. carb cleaner and a rag. had to do it all the time with my old 96 tacoma.

 

i have adjusted idle screw and turned it all the way clockwise and doesn't seem like its making a difference.

 

Pull the intake hose at the throttle body and inspect the plate to make sure it is closing, sounds like someone adjusted the idle by adjusting the cable tension.

If it doesn't close, inspect the throttle cables and see if there is any play/slack to it. It should have some slack to it.

If it has slack and the plate isn't fully closed grab a flash light and inspect for blockage or bends or other physical obstructions on the inside of the intake.

Assuming the plate is fully closed, and the idle screw is still not effective. Carefully unscrew the ide screw and inspect the rubber o-ring, and replace it.

If it has slack and the idle screw rubber is good you'll need to check the other parts of the system. The dash pot and throttle opener, with the FSM proceedures.

*EDIT* Just in case you over look it the idle speed should be between 750-850 Warm.

 

ok thanks ill check that out, today i started it at 2 different times and it idled about 500-750. then by the time i drove it a little bit and stopped and put back into nuetral it was back up to 1300 and about 1100 in gear, to me its weird that it idles higher in nuetral than in gear, but i also understand when its in gear the power is getting transfered to the drivetrain.

 

sounds like vacuum leak to me. you're getting crappy gas mileage because your fuel injection is compensating for the extra air from the vacuum leak

 

There is only one place to leak air around the throttle plate. The Throttle opener.

In the FSM, page EG2-238 (P02974) the fourth picture shows the location of the hose and device.

Pull the hose plug the hole, and squeeze the diaphram back with the throttle arm. Your idle setting should be working.

i was looking over some things and realized my "dash pot" is most likely bad. considering the boot is torn and the "plunger?" part is really loose
