Well there is no code 2 or 5 for a '93 22re, but there is a code 25, which is lean mixture.....
The lean mixture is obviously why you have to hold down the gas pedal. Since you're smelling gas, bit bet you're leaking somewhere.

Its running lean. if it were running rich you probably wouldnt have to hold the pedal down. With the CEL light, it flashes a number (2 in this case) short pause ( maybe one second) then the rest of the code (5). then a longer pause. It will then either blink for a different code or loop back and blink the same one again if no other code is present. For future reference, '88 and newer there re no single digit codes for the 22re.

It would be code 25.... You dont add up the numbers, you "put them together". The first series of flashes is the first digit (in the 'tens' place of a double digit number, in this case 20) then the second number is the second digit in a double digit number, in this case 5 (in the 'ones' place of a double digit number. Put those together and you have 25, which is code 25 which is lean mixture . There are a lot of things that can cause lean mixture: Bad O2 sensor, leak in the exhaust, leaky injectors, low fuel pressure, bad AFM, ignition system (plugs, wires, cap rotor, coil, etc.) open in injector circuit, engine coolant temperature sensor. There may be a few more so start looking.
